TRADE ISSUR
TO BE ISSUED SEPTEMBER 4th. 1885.
The Waynesboro Citizen thinks
that the people of Georgia can
now look only to the Senate for
wholesome Icgisla.ion. It says:
“They have lost all rai.h in the
House. There o-c good and true

ty of demagogues, fanatics and

wise counsels of tnc henest legisla

A BLOODY IIOOMKKAML
A few days ago we noticed the
desertion from tlio Republican
ranks of a prominent member of
that party in Ohio, who gave as bis
reason that ho thought the bloody
shirt ought to he buried. It would
seem that the red Republican gar
ment is likely to become a bloody
boomerang und return to knock
out tho lile of those who wave it.
As an evidence of the disgust it
creating in the Republican ranks,
we give below an extract from an
interview with Gen. John S. Kouniz,
Past Commander-In-Chief of the
Grand Army of the Republic, a
well-known and prominent Repub
lican politician:
Meeting General Kountz this
morning a Hue repievcntativc asked
him for his opinion of Captain Dow
ling's views as published
“Look here, young man,” was his
heartless reply. "I dou’l want to be
interviewed. Rut I will say to you
that I most heur'ily indorse all tlml
Dowling has said concerning the
South and this bloody shirt cry.
The soldier who faithfully served
his country in the hour ofperd has
a right to act politically as be
pleases, and wc have no right to
criticise him. Captain Rowliug
was a gallant soldier and served
with distinetiou. As to his views
upon the question raised by the
Republican State plallorm, 1 desire
to say 1 agree with him. 1 believe
that the war is over, and am satis
fled that tho views expressed by
Gen. Grant before his death are in
dorsed by the large majority of the
Republican party. 1 am certain
they arc the views of all if not
nearly all the old soldiers.”
Here General Kountz showed the
aeribe a proposition fora Ulue and
Gray monument at Atlanta, where
on the names of such noted North
ern Generals as Logan, Hickcn
looper and others appear by the
aide of those ef noted Confederates
like Gordon, Buckner and others
“Title,” said be, “is an evidence ol
what I have said. 1 am everlast
ingly epposed to keeping alive sec
tional hatreds and malice, and have
ne sympathy whatever with men
who desire to do so. I am glad
the war is over, glad that patrioit-
lsm and love of country knows no
limit of section, and that cordiality
ol leeliug pervades the masses of
the country. Nothing makes me
more angry than this attempt to
make political capital by exciting
sectional animosities.”
“You have traveled pretty ex
tensively through the South, hare
you not? What views do the
Southerners hold on these mat
ters?”
“My official trip through the
Beulh was one of the most pleasant
I was celled upou to make—and
that is saying s good deal. People
who represent that there exists
there any bitterness toward the
ng about. The feeling among
the old Confederates is that the re
•ult of the war was for the best,
and they say that they arc glad it
turned out as it did.” » * *
General Kountz is without doubt
sincere in all that he says. His
views upon this bloody shirt mat
ter ars respectfully commcadcd to
the numerous “organs which take
the Republican platloim for a text
tMevsry article.

Thai old story of the two chil
dren butchering and hanging a
younger brother four years old,
has been revamped and is again on
the rounds—this lime as having
occurred in Alabama, and being
printed in the leading dailies as a
“special.” Three or four years ago
this same story did double duty
an entire summer as a-sensation,
and its revival at this particular
time shows a dearth in the sensa
tional news market.
The “most unkindest cut of all”
given to the new Southern maga
zine it is the notice of the Sparta
Ishmaelite:
“Wc have received the first issue
of a new agricultural monthly puli-
iished in Atlanta uuder tho title of
“Dixie.” It is a very creditable
production and deserves a warm
welcome from the farmers of the
South.”
The Inst number of the Barnes
villc Mail contains an original and
striking comparison of the town as
it was before the big tire a year
ago, and as it is now. The com
parison is tno9t favorable to the
pluck and energy of the business
men of Barncsville.
It is impossible for two objects
