of the commercial wealth and enterprise
of our enterprising city.
The Bargain Man has
A GOOD LEGISLATOR.
There are boidc members of tbc
legislature who realize that they
were sent there to work for the best
interests of the people, and who
perform tbeir duty honestly anil
conscientiously. These members
are rarely popular, from the fact
that they oppose and expose all
schemes for taking money out of
treasury in an unconstitutional
manner, and oppose all extravagant
appropriations, keeping constantly
in view the fact that all public
money must come from the pockets
of the people. Such a member is
Hon. I). B. Harrell, Representative
from Webster county. With a
cool, clear bead, a tine judicial
mind, be has made liia-influence
felt in all important matters of leg
islation, arid that influence has
always been exerted favor of econ
omy and against all species of class
legislation. A member of the
House remarked to us, recently,
that Judge Harrell had by bis vigi
lance and honesty saved many
thousands of dollars to the people
of this State, and that his efforts in
this direction ought to be more
fully recognized. We arc of the
aame opinion, and tor that reason
this item is penned.
Those of our fruit growers who
six years ago set out Leconte pear
trees arc now reaping the reward
of their enterprise and industry in
bushels of handsome and luscious
fruit as ever grew ou a tree. It is
a wonder to us that our farmers do
not plant more of them. They are
hardy, free from disease, come into
bearing soon, and can be propa
gated from alips. The fruit com-
mauds a ready sale in home and
foreign markets at big priocs, and
a pear orchard will in a few years
far exceed in value an orange grove,
while it can be raised to bearing at
onc-fourtb the cost. Those who
plant pear trees now will find in a
few years that they have a most
profitable investment.
The time was, not many years
ago, when Southern farmers liought
nearly all their vegetable seeds for
planting, and they do so yet to a
great extent, thinking the raising
of them too small a business to
engage their attention. But for the
past two years some parlies in this
section have made a business of
raising seeds and selling them to
the seed bouses, and have found it
a profitable business.
In a newspaper dcaciiplion of a
new sod handsome building at
Bedalia, Mo., we notice that the in
side was finished in Georgia (line,
and the paper spoke of it as being
extremely handsome. It will not
be many years before the beautiful
yellow pine of Georgia will be used
lor decorative purposes throughout
th* entire country.

, As the South grows in wealth
and prosperity a demand for South
ern lands must Ire expected, and
from the rapid strides onward that
1 she has made of late years, and the j
wonderful recuperative powers she
has shown since the war, it is no (
wonder that this demand has
already begun. No doubt the re
sources of the South ns displayed
at the Atlanta, Louisville and New
Orleans Expositions, have done
much towards advertising these
resources and wonderful capacity
of our section, and have favorably
a'traded these British capitalists
towards her. The movement is yet
in its infancy, but it has started,
and nr year l»y year passes on,
Southern lands will become more
and more in demand, and capital
and immigration will pour into our
territory in a steady stream. The
pros|iect is that in a very few years
the new South will far outstrip the
old, and become the wealthiest and
most powerful portion of the Union.

It is a commom belief that the j
