Our people serin lo have paid
more attention, this season, to hay
raising, or rather saving, (for it re
quires little attention to make it
here) than ever before. Several
new machines for mowing the luxu
riant crab grass have been pur
chased, and all manner of scythes,
hooks and blades have lieen brought
into rrquh'Uion. Thus, gradually
our people are drifting into the

He left a daughter, however, who
is still living, and claims to be
more than one hundred years old.
Her mother was a negtess, and the
girl partook of the worst cbarac
teristics of both parents. She
could never be controlled. She
would run away and abide in the
darkest swamps for weeks and
months, subsisting on roots, herbs,
berries and such morsels of meat as
came in her way, eating it raw like
a wild animal. She would arm her
self with a bludgeon, and woe betide
the man or woman who came within
reach of her stalwart arm. A
daughter was born to her, and
liile it was yet quite young the
mother lietook herself to the swamp,
and remained there for many weeks.
When unduly pressed by hunger
she would venture forth at dead of
night and pick up such food as she
could find about the larm houses.
She is still quite active, her long,
coarse, black hair falls below her
waist, and she takes an especial
delight in recounting the exploits
of her early days. The old pipe is
before me now and il I can get a
stem to fit it we will stroll down
to Kincliafoonce, and, seated by thc
bubbling spring where “Old Hick
ory” camped a longtime ago, I'll
let you smoke from the venerable
relic, and in the blue wreaths that
curl upward you may see what I
have seen—the air peopled with
spirits of a departed race—and you

A Remarkable Invention.
For years the greatest fear of
cotton ginners has been fire. A
lintroom is like a powtier manufac
tory, a spark bring sufficient to
cause its destruction, and during
every fall we are called upon to re
cord the frequent destruction of
gin houses by fire, the first account
of this season being given to-day.
The invention of Mr. Renfroe, by
attaching a fire entixguisher to Ga
gin, has made fire in the gin room
no longer to lie feared, for by a
simple turn of thc wrist the ginner
can flood his room with water and
in a second extinguish any fire that
may occur. In another column will
be found a description of this new
and prosperity, such as the coun- j profound his listeners could not 1 efficacy, one being from a well-
