Oar CsttSB Market
We begin to belisve with Bar-
num that the American people love
to he humbugged. We have time
and again explained why the cot
ton markets at Columbus, Eufaula
and other places were quoted
higher than that of Americus, but
yet those quotations appear to at
tract farmers. In Americus tbe 1
planter pays uo charges except a
slight one for selling, and that is ]
optional with him, as he is at lib-1
erty lo sell lor himselt. At other |
points the planter is charged with !
storage, commissions, insurance,
drayage, and other items, which,
deducted from bis cash receipts,;
leaves him a less sum than he would
have received at Americus at a less
price pel pound. It is natural that
a planter should wish to receive
the highest possible amount for his
cotton, but be should take into
consideration tbe differences be
tween the gross price and the net
price. The planters ol this section
may depend upon getting the high
est msrket price for their cotton in
Americus. as we have here active
competition among buyers, and
our buyers are in direct com
munication with the principal
markets ol this country and Eu
rope. shipping direct. Thev should
remember that the difference in
charges between Americus and j
other points amounts to j c per j
pound in faver of Americus Our
merchants always stand ready to
give an advance of one eighth to
one quarter of a cent a |>oucd on *
cotton paid oa account, and to seil
goods as low as they can be pur
chased anywhere in Georgia. All
we ask is lor farmers lo investigate
the matter, and if Americus will
pay them as high a »W price for
cotton as other markets, to bring :
it here, and not lake it elsewhere
upon a mere supposition 'hat they
will get more.

On next Wednesday, the 9tb I
Inst., at six o’clock our Jewish j
friends will close their places of
business in observance of P.osbosh-
ana, their “New \ear” 5040. They |
will enjoy themselves in a way cus
tomary to their nation, and in a nice
quiet way the goose, instead of the
turkey, will reign supreme, and as
usual quite an enjoyable day will
be bad by all. Ten days later, j
"Youi Kipper” will occur. This is
the day on which they last and
atone for all sins committed since
their last day of atonement.
