For years, and years, Americus,
Columbus,and other cities of South
west Georgia hayc drawn a fine
trade from Webster and Stewart
counties; and they st ill continue to
draw on that fertile land, whose re
sources seem incxkauslablr.
Beginning at Americus,and trav
eling along the line of the narrow
gauge railroad, we pass through a
fertile, well timbered, and
watered country. Twelve giiles
takes us to the point where the con-
st motion force of the road are now
located. This section of the coun
try is known far anil wide as the
"red levels" of Sumter and Web
ster counties. Magnolia Springs,
with their healing waters and pleas
ant surroundings, arc locale-1 near
the present terminus of the road,
and the beautiful level country
which stretches away on every
hand, is known as the Plains ol
Dura: and is settled by a hospitable,
industrious, and go a head class of
farmers whose generous fields yield
handsome competence. Corn,
pie busy erecting new buildings,
repairing the old ones and looking
anxiously eastward for the
peeled steam engine, which is to
open up to the world ibis glorious
region. The sound ol the saw and
hammer are waking the echo; the
painter's brush is busy beautifying
lliu buildings, and there are many
evidences of energy and enterprise
exhibited in the beautiful county
silo of Stewart county.
Tliroucliout the region penet rat A , lrn -. —
cd by this road there ia plenty of lvrr s/S«i'
j land, both cleared aud uncleared,
whieh can lie purchased at reason
able figures, and one contemplating
an investment in that sort of bust
ness has here a wide field from
which to select, and he will find a
kind ami generous people ready to
welcome him; a people who arc
honest, moral, intelligent and law-
abiding.
The road is under the manage
ment of a hoard ol directors clioscu
from the first business men of
Americus, Preston and Lumpkin,
men who are by no means euthusi
asts, experimenting with vague
chimeras, hut men who know a good
thing when they see it, nnd who
aim to make this enterprise a pay
ing adventure.
So much for the road, the coun
try and the people. May they each
and all be benefitled as we feel that
they undoubtedly will, and may
the coming season prove a white
stone in the path of time to mark
the dawn of a new era of peace,
plenty and prosperity in a laud
that is certainly excelled by none
tin the face of the earth.
