Mr. E. J. Donnell, th* sagacious

There would certainly b* Justio* la

would insert In his new urifl bill

THE RAILROAD t'OHMIMUM.
There seems to be a diepoeitioa
on tbe part of tone of tbe pollti
cians to make the Railroad Com
miaaioQ an issue in tbe ooming
State campaign. Well, we do not
know as it would do any barm if
the issue ie confined to tbe election
of leglelatore, for they are the only
officers wko have anything to do
with th* question. From tbe peti
tion* presented to the last legisla-
ture, asking for a modification of
the law creating the Commission,

tion of the people are not sstiifled
with the present law, and the com

the people an opportunity of ex-

The white republicans of tbe Dis
trict of Columbia, as well as many
of the blacks, are antagonizing the
nomination of Matthews,the Albany
negro lawyer, to succeed Fred
Douglass. They realize that Doug
lass must go, but they don’t want
to see him succeeded by a democratic
negro. This only serves to illus
trate tbe fact that the white repub
licans have got no use for the negro
only so long as he votes the repub
lican ticket. Their professions of
interest in the negro as an op
pressed race is thrown to the winds
whenever tbe negro shows tbe in
dependence to think and act for
himself.
Mr. Randall and his friends have
refused to support a compromise
tariff bill. Now let Mr. Morrison
report bis bill for the reduction of
tbe tariff and let there be a show
ing of bands. If, a* tbe Atlanta
Constitution says, there is no real
difference between tbe two present
parties, let a line be drawn on tbe
tariff question. It is time there
was * distinctive issue, and we
know of no question on wbiob an
issue can be better made than on
tbe tariff.
