noted as a famous fishing resort,
and although the trees are not
leaved yet, and spring is very
backward, the party found plenty
of the finny tribe to work on. It
is said tbat Judge Harrell claims
to have put tbe first fish in that
pond, but Capt. Bell says i( he did
the Judge must be a great many
years older than he admits being,
for Capt. Bell, (and he is no youth
himself) used to catch them when
he was a young boy.
At this season of tbe year very
few bream are caught, but many
magnificent speckled fellows were
hauled io. Joe Stevens got bold
of one that was so strong it pulled
him oil the stump into tbe pond
Joe denies this, but the evidence
shows that he went into tbe pond
suddenly, sod how else could he
have got there?
Before dinner the party, with
the assistance ol a trap and fifty
odd negroeB, managed to catch
about fifty tieh, weighing from one
to five pounds, and bv practicing
a little economy they managed to
havo enough for dinner. Fresh
Osh, nicely cooked, make tbe finest
kind of eating, and if the reporter
ate a little more than usual, who
could blsme him?
At three o’clock the party re
luctantly pulled up, leaving Jesse
Stallings and Dick Bell still watch
ing their corks, and sailed in to
town, htving passed a day that will
not be soon forgotten.
Florida anil Georgia.
Dr. S. W. Fowler, of Delaware,
Ohio, one of the Ohio excursion
ists, is writing up an account ol
his trip for the Delaware Gazette.
In his description of Florida be
saya:
"The tourist ie universally met by
the expression, "We never had
such cold weather before, and we
can only account for it, by you
people bringing it with you from
the North.” We will say nothing
about the cold weather, but tbe
horrible dampness reminded ue of
tbo Maumee Swamps of north wes
tern Ohio in the spring of the year.
But not so in Georgia. They
too, bad auflhred from the extreme
oold weather, but already the
balmy, warm, spring-like weather
was ready to greet us. Here the
buds and flowers were growing
and in bloom, and tbe farmers were
planting and aowlng. Here we
found the atmosphere warm and
dry Irom early morning until late
at night.’’
Tbo Dr. promiaea a letter on
Ueorgia next week.
Me. Job* Nicholson lost hie fine
grey torse last Thursday. He was
a valuable animal, and many time*
John haa refuted $800 for him.
Farmers are making the good
weather count Many have corn
ap, and are replanting and every
body it preparing land lor cotton.
It la said that tbe Hannabacbie
Valley exourslon which came over
Thursday represented $600,000
worth of property.
The little folks enjoy this weath
er; and the very babies in their
oarriagee apeak Joy In their coun
tenances at they glide along in the
genial atmosphere.
