WIND AND R41V
Aaolhtr Disastrous Htorm Visits (Js.
All day Tuesday the clouds were
dark and low.and towards the close
of the day a heavy wind, accompani
ed by thunder and lightning, came
on.
Those of our people who had
ycione pits sought refuge in them,
fearing a cyclone. The wind was
very violent in ‘.his city the greater
part of the night, but no damage
was done beyond blowing down a
few fences and trees. The country,
however, did not tare so well.
On Mr. II. C. Bagley'B place, a
few miles from town, known as the
old Walker place, when the cy
clone of two vears ago did such
destructive work, the wind came
near being a tornado. One negro
house, sheltering eight people, was
entirely demolished, but no one
was seriously injured, though one
or two were hurt by falling tim
bers. In the house a colored wo
man was very sick with pneumo
nia, and she was thoroughly
drenched with rain before she
could he moved to another house
near by. All the fencing along
that road was blown down.
On Mr. If. 8. Lockett and O. A.
Herndon's place, neat by, the
fencing was down. One house on
Lockett’s place was lifted a little.
Mr. J. D. Shepherd also had some
fencing blown down.
On the Drayton road several
miles irom town a negro settlement
almost totnlly destroyed, five
houses being blown down. The
fencing along that road was down,
also.
We arc told that near Friend
ship four or five negro houses were
destroyed, hut no one was injured.
All over tbu State the storm was
very severe, the rain falling in tor
rents, but fortunately there being
no cyclones.

A Mad Hog.
Tuesday the women and children
on C. A. Bell a place, about ten
miles from Americus, had a bad
acare about a mad dog. Tbe dog
came on a run to the bouse, and
the lightened women only saved
themselves and the children by
locking the doors. The dog's
mouth was wide open, and be was
foaming badly. Mr. W. K. Bow-

Mu. Kiiitoh:—The following sta
tistics culled from the 2nd volume
of Blaine’s “Twenty years of Con
gress,” just published, will prove
interesting reading, us they give a
comprehensive idea of the magni
tude of the recent war between the
States.
There were enlisted during the
war in the army of the U. S. seven
teen hundred regiments of infantry,
over two hundred and seventy reg
intents of c&valty, and more than
900 batteries of artillery.
When tbe armies were disband
ed the muster rolls numbered
1,000,510 men. Those previously
killed, retired on account of
wounds and sickness, and expira
tion of shorter terms of service,
who did not re enlist, were 1,000,-
000 more. A single coipsof Grant’s
army at the Wilderness, or of
Sherman's at Atlanta,or oi Meade's
at Gettysburg, Or of McClellan’s on
tbe Peninsula, or of Hooker's at
Cbancellorsville, contained more
troops than Washington or Scott
ever commanded on the field, a
larger number tbau Taylor or Jack-
ton ever saw mustered. Tbe armies
were commanded by 150 Major-
Generals and tiOO Generals of
Brigade.
During the four years of war
there were 2,265 engagements with
the Confederate troops. There
were 330 engagements in which tbe
Union loss was more than 100.
These oonlliclt extended over an
area of oountry 2,000 miles from
Northernmost to Southernmost
points, and 1,500 miles from East
to West.
The amount of money disbursed
by Quarter-Master General Miga.
and for which be held vouchers,
amounted to fifteen hundred mil- j closed their first week’s engage-
roent at McDonald’s Opera House
last night with the presentation of
“Cinthia, the Gypsy Queen.” The
Attendance was good, considering
the inclement weather, and the
performance pleased tbe audience.

perfectly satisfied with the cotton market.
Twenty-one baits were shipped from

so badly crowded. Over ‘seven hundred

it will take nearly two hundred more to
Niipply the demands. There is but little
now on hand. Oar clever and polite
conductor, Mr. Mathews, wants to know
when we are going to get in more guano
Me says he loves to haul it. Me does all
he can to assist us in handling it. Mo is
the right man in the right place, and we
