Florida strawberries now bring
$2.50 per bos in New York City.
The same fruit raised in hothouses
bring $5 a quart.
It in strange how completely
prosperity unnerves some men.
Here actually a Michigan base ball
player baa committed suicide, and
right at the beginning of the sea
son, too.
The later reports from the Hooded
districts but add to the damages
sustained. The little city of Rome
seems to have been the greatest suf
ferer in Georgia, the entire business
portion being submerged and com
munication with the outside world
cut off.
Here they are, lake your choice
and be happy: T. J. Simmons, A.

Some idea of tho extent of the
recent rains may be gathered from
the fact that on last Tuesday, (or
the first time in the history of the
weather bureau, it wns either rain
ing or cloudy throughout the Unit
ed States. There was not a ray of
sunshine in any State or territory.
Wheeling (W. Va.) is excited
over the discovery that, in spite of
the resbingling of a house alleged
to be haunted, there still appears
upon the roof a coffin-shaped mark,
which has been noticed upon it
ever since a man murdered his wife
and concealed her remains in a
coffin in the loft. For .twenty years
the house remained tenantless, and
when sold recently a new roof wns
put on, but, as stated, the coffin
ffigrk has again appeared.
Mr. Edmunds’ recent so-culled
triumph in the United States Senate
was but a barren victory in every
respect. His resolutions were only
by one vote adopted as it was, while
a number of Republ'can Senators
declared beforehand that they
would not be governed by their
vote, but would only oast it for his
resolutions to save their Vermont
colleague from a mortifying de r sal.
It was truly a Pyrrhic victory, and
that is way the Republican organs
are as silent and oold over it as
the blood in Mr. Edmunds’ veins.
At the Husk penitentiary, in
Texas, is now being cast for the
Capitol building at Austin, some
of the largest iron columns ever
cast in the South, weighing ."><100
pounds each, and in point of work
mansliip cannot be excelled in
America. “There can also be seen
at this penitentiary,’' says a cones
pondent. “one of the most complete
and best equipped foundries in
Texas, and to see the prog ess of
the work on the Capitol building
cuttings, consisting of huge
columns, caps, pedestals, bases,
etc., is enough to cause every
Texan to rejoice over the ftet that
in the new and elegant Capitol
building there will be seen Texas

The I’erry Journal, in discusaing
the political situation in this con
gressional district, says:
It Is said that Judge John Me- , , , wl ,„. uff( , rlu ,
Iveg, ot Montgomery county, will doctors, i ha** tried
be a candidate for congress from
the third oongiessional diatrict. If
this be true, there is likely to be
a triangular contest in this district.
With Crisp from Sumter. Duncan
from Houston, and Me Rea from
Montgomery, in the field, there
will be no lack of available material
from which to make a congressman.
White we are not positively assur
ed that Col.C. C. Duncan will enter
the race, we believe that auch will
be the case. In that event, we are
satisfied that he will reoelve cordial
•upport from all section* of the
diatrict. He is worthy ot all the
honors thht cso be accorded him,
and able to perforin efficiently the i
duties of the position.
While we accord to Messra. M -
Rae and Duncan all tbe ability !
claimed for them, we can eee no I
good reason why there should be |
a change made in Congressman.
Judge Crisp has made au able and
efficient Representative, and his
usefulness will be increased each ,
