Atlanta, having tailed to secure
the Georgia Midland railroad, is
now talking of building a narrow
guage road to Ilawkinsville, to
secure competitive rates to Savan
nah und Brunswick. If Atlanta
wants competitive rates to all im-
poilant points, she bad better build
a road to Americus, for within u
yeur we will have competitive rates
not only to all important points in
the United States, but to Europe.
Our consul at Vienna draws a
pititul picture ol the condition of
Austrian workmen, and says that
the papers of that country suppress
all news Iromtbe United States ex
cept that which tends to discourage
emigration, with the purpose ol
making the Austrians contented
with their lot. But it is not likely
that contentment will come, for the
highest wages of skilled workmen
in machine shops are said to be
only $4 40 per week, and the day
is twelve hours long.
Belgium is having the usual cz
perience with rioters. A large
proportion of those arrested arc
found to be old convicts—profes
iional criminals, who seek the op
portunity of political or industrial
excitement to create disturbances. I
This is a circumstance which
should always be taken into ac
count in dealing with or criticising
a mob. Its violence is nearly
always the work, not of the nomi
nal leaders of the crowd, but of
thieves and ruffians who are prompt
to seize any opportunity which
give them a obanoe.
The quid nuncs in Washington,
having nothing else to talk about
just now, are falling back upon tbeir
old amueement of reorganizing the

Hard times are reigning supreme all over the country, and
the seeker of goods for Cosh, in job lots and auction is well re
warded. Never before have we met with such anxiety on the
part of wholesale and others that wanted to “sell out,” to sell
their goods, and knowing the weakness of our customers, who
want goods at bargain prices, we invested largely and have j nvu Door u. iu« Jmiw oi a
