here engaged in making an average
ot the mails coming and going on
the A. P. & L. road. A short talk
with him revealed many things
generally unknown by people not
connected with the mail service,
and which are of general interest.
For the thirty days that Mr. sledge
will be here it will be his duty to
weigh every pouch as it comes off
or goes on the train, and make a
record of u. At the end of that
time the weight of the mail to aud
from each station can be approxi
mated. The government is very
•trict about Us mails, and for every
failure on the part of one road to
mnkecounecliona with another and a
mail la missed $50 is charged up
agninet them. The railroads are
allowed $72 per mile per year for

died in Hawkinaville last Saturday

Mr. Barlow was a son of Dr. VV. J
Barlow, late of this county, bin
now of Dooly. He was about 25
years of age, and unmarried. He
was one of the most genial of young
men, and was very popular. He
was buried in Snow. Doolv county

writing, ami cyphering in the fore
noon, all of which I must say was a
success. We met scholars thai
both did credit to the teacher and
themselves. At l o'clock we were
served will, a dinner thaL all en
joyed. The way chickens »Dd
cakes were lavished ou us we almost
forgot the hurd times. At 2 o’clock
the school reassembled for closing
lessons, which was geography en-
giish grammar aud spelling, which
was none the less a success. There
were short speeches delivered by
Dr. B. L. Joiner, and Distric
Trustee, lion Thud Aycuck, and
others which was listened to with
marked attention. There were no*
less than 25 while gentleman pres
cut. Atuight the school give an
exhibition which was grand. We are
proud to see the iuipiovciucul made
hv the colored scholars under the
control ot Henry J. Martin. His
school numbered about 75 pupils
They showed that they loved their
teacher. He is highly respected
by both white aud colored people
