Charlmton, 8. C., September 2
—The last eaithquake shock was
experienced at 11:50 last night,
since which time there has been no
vibrations. The people are jnst
beginning to pluck up enough
courage to come out. Efforts are
being made to clear paths through
the streets for the passage of vehi
cles and pedestrians, and the city
once more begins to show signs oi
life. For two long day s and nights
of horror, women and children have
beeD camping out in parks and
squares. The earthquake has
swept over the city like a besom of
destruction, an-l Charleston is laid
down in the dust. It is impossible
to give any correct estimate of loss
of life and property. For .wo
diya and nights the people have
done nothing but huddle on the
squares. Small detached rebel
parties are going to dig out the
dead from the debris or succor the
wounded.
The first systematized effort to
get at the facts is now being made.
A list of the dead, recognized and
reported this morning at this time,
11 A. M., foots up to 16. and the
search has only commenced. The
list of wounded will go into the
hundreds.
About seven eighths of the bous
es and public buildings in the city
are either damaged or wrecked.
Even historic St. Michael’s and St.
Phillip’s are so badly wrecked that
it is feared they will have to be
taken down.
The waves, from 9:55 Tuesday
night, have been coating about
once every five or six hours.
There has been none now for
twelve hours, and hopes are enter
tained that horror is about over.

. EvirylMSy,
The following “yarn” Is beiug
spun by a large number of our ex
changes. It seems to he an orphan.
The most peaceable and danger
ous man in all the United States
lives in Murray county, Georgia.
He is kind hearted good-tempered,
never had a quarrel in hie lile,
wouldn’t burl a By, and everybody
is afraid of him. About a year
ago he was cutting wood when t.li*
axe flew off the handle and killed
a man who had come to pay him
$59 He never got a cent of
money.
The next week, while ferrying a
friend across a river, he ran the
boat against a snag and bis friend
was drowned. About a month
later be felled a tree on a stranger,
who wa3 lying asleep in the woods
killing him instantly. Not long
after he shot a wild turkey and
killed a neighbor whom he didn’t
see at all.
Turee weeks later he lighted a
kerosene lamp, when it suddenly
exploded, burning to death a col
porteur to whom the inoffensive
Georgian had courteously extend
ed the hospitalities of his home.
All this man’s friends run when
they see him coming. He is him
self afraid to extend any kindness
save to his enemies, of whom he
has none. His last public act was
to cross the street with a ladder on
his shoulder last 4tb of July, while
a procession was passing, and when
somebody shouted to him to hurTy
on, he obligingly turned around
and went back. The procession
was laid out and the day was
*r>oiled.
