The great secret of hiipccbh in bee
keeping i«* simple ami thorough
management. This can only he
... ... . . , i t ii i . , | accomplished by a complete under-
u is a well known tact that we had fully determined to j standing of the nature, habits, and
abandon the sale of Clothing, and with that object ill view, requirement of the honey-bee, con-
bined with labor, titudy and ex|»eri-
ence in handling them, and a
mechanical knowledge of the con-
Htruction of the liivcn that will give
the greatest profit witli the leant
outlay of money ami labor.
Everything should lie in order
about tin* apiary, Let everything
lie perfectly clean about the liivett,
the entraiieeH, and if in a locality
where ant* bother, the hiveHMhould
be placed upon a bench witli nup-
porting partH that have been tarred,
over which the ant will not crawl.
The bee-keeper Hhould work witli
gentleiieHH and care, avoiding jar-
ringH lnovementH or anything that
agitate the bees. If the bee-keeper
is timid or witflies to protect him
self from being stuug, he should
wear u veil. Care should always be
taken that earii hive contains a
queen. If any are found to be
queenlese, they sliould be supplied
with brood from some strong colo
ny or doubled up with some weak
colony.
Tlie queen’s office is to lay eggs;
she is, properly speaking, the moth
er of the colony, and the only per
fect developed female in the hive.
If there is plenty of cells for her use,
she will deposit about 3,000eggs per
day, during tlie best breeding sea
son. The native queen is much
darker than the drones or workers,
but tlie Italian queen is brigter|t)ian
either.
Tlie queen lias shorter wings than
either workers or drones, witli a
long, finely tapered abdomen. The
queen lias a sting but never uses it
only in combat witli a rival queen.
A queen can J»e reared from
any egg that will produce a
worker. The bees prepare for
rearing u queen after the egg
is laid, by cutting away the small
cells around it, forming a large cell
about the shape of a pca-mit about
the egg. When u queen is lost, tlie
bees will immediately form u num
ber of these cells. When the tlrst
one hutches sin* will immediately
destroy the others, unless prevented
by the workers, in which case she
will leave tlie hive witli a portion
of the bees, thereby causing them
to swarm. This can be'prevented
by watching, ami when the first
queen is about to hatch, destroy tlie
others. Ill alsnit five days after the
queen hatches she will leave tlie
hive to meet tlie drone. Tills once
accomplished suffices for life, and
she returns to the hive never to
leave it unless with'a swarm. Tlie
length of a queen's life is from
three to five years.
The drones are shorter and, more
bulky than queens; they are larger

first queen cell is about to hatch, de
stroy the others; otherwise they
may swarm too much and become
w eak and, without great care, fall a
prey to the moth. But the system
of dividing colonies is considered
better than natural swarming, for
by tliis system the loss of bees by
absconding is obviated. Tlie best
method of dividing is to take from
one to three frames of brood from
different hives,according to strength
and liability to sw'arm, putting
empty frames iu their places in tlie
old hives, then take the brood so
taken in an empty hive, and, near
tlie middle of a idee W'arm (lay, re
move some strong colony from its
stand ntid place the new oqe whe
tlie old one stood, so as to catch
wlmt bees are in the fields on their
return. They can now be left to
rear a queen themselves, or be given
a queen or queen-cell from a queen
rearing hive.

Catarrh is not simply an incon

advanced outpost of upproacldng

lect its warning; it brings deadly
evils in its train. Before it is too
late, use I)r. Sage’s Catarrh Reme

to the umount of a few hundred in
each hive; their only duty is to im
pregnate tlie young queens, and as
soon as tlie sw arming season is over,
they are destroyed by tlie workers.
Where there is a large apiary there
sliould only lie a small portiou of
drone-eomb left in each iiive, and
thereby prevent an over-produc
tion of drones.
Tlie workers live from 30 to 120
days. IT|m>ii them devolves the du
ty of building eouibs, supplying the
hive witli provisions, and proteet-
ing the stores. The comb grows
in rings on the ahdomeu of the
workers. Kach worker is an unde-
velo(ied female,. and would have
been a queen had the cell in which
they were reared been large enough.
The habits and instincts of the
workera are too well known to be
further discussed. From the time
tlie egg is laid until tlie hatching
of the bee is, for the workers,
about 2! days; the drone, 24 days;
and the queen, 10 days. In this
climate they breed the entire year,
but in colder countries hut little
brood is found in|tlie winter.
Wheu the honey season sets’in,
you may naturally expect swarm
ing to follow, and after the first
swarm Issues others should be pre
vented from issuing for the time
being, by watehiug, aud when the
