THE DIDLINGTON ESTATE.
An EoglHh Ual owner and HU Propin
A Lively Scene.
Tliis wne Mr. Tywwn Amherst. wht

which he owns almost in its entirety, an
income sufficient to enable liim to beat

so to speak, obliged to give his people a
jubilee fete, and to do so on a larj.'r scale.
Nine parishes sent their contingents in
700 vehicles of every description, which
from the early forenoon discharged their
freight of men. women and children
within the gates of his park; his flag
(tearing hi* coat of anus fluttered from
the top of the )mll tower. Free acorn*
was given to the grounds, the gardens,
the heronry, the deer inclosure, the con
servatories, the plantations, and the lake
with its bridge*, summer and linat limt*g
and many islands. On a meadow be
tween the house and church eleven cr
twelve large marquees wen* erected: one
devoted to a horticultural exhibition of
fruit, vegetables and flowers where the
cottagers won prizes; three to refresh
meats, and the rest to gul*tuiitial spread*
ot dinner* and tern served at different
times to men. women add cliildnn.
Nearly 8.000 people were Mr. Amherst**
hj f cial guests, amused and fed during
twelve hours at hi* expense; 4.000 more
had linen admitted to his park, und were
free to enjoy the various |>lui.«*s of the
fete, the merry-go-round* and swings, tlie
ventriloquist*. jugglers, and excellent
military bunds, aa well as the elalmrate
illumination* and fireworks which at dusk
converted many acres of lake and ground*
into a fairy scene. Ig Miking into the
tents set a|iort for the tenants, you saw
almost interminable tables laden with
such round* ami sirloins of I*-of as serin
to appertain ementially to England, with
rows of beer tankards, and other edibk*
and drinkables. Bailiffs and laud agents
who have been for fifty years on the
estate presided over the tables and carved
the mighty joints; the giver of the feast
made an appropriate speech in each tent,
and was never more lustily cheered in the
house of commons than by the school
children who had partalo n < ; the tea and
cake in quantities which would have as-
toiiish«sl a regiment of hungry uddieri*.
The ladies of the family waited on them,
as also on the women, and saw that none
rose till they were fully satiated. A
cricket match lwtween tWo parishes was
a great feature of the entertainment, the
captain of one eleven being Lord William
Cecil, son of the Marquis of Exeter, play
ing with gardeners, keepers and laborers
against a bam in which social ranks were
equally confounded.
Hoguhcuds of beer, ton* of beef, gallons
of tea were consumed at what must have
been an enormous expense; and if the
host allowed, in some tents set apart for
that purpose, refreshments to besold at a
merely m»niinal price by previous arrange
ments made w ith the caterers, it was for
a reason which probably would never
have occurred to a stranger. By all
established canons he was, as lord of the
innnor, perfectly justified in inviting and
treat in# all bis tenants and people living
on his land; as a member of |»ai liament
bad he treated and fed the outlying in
habitants he would have laid himself open
to tlie imputation of bribery and corrup
tion, and of attempting to tamper with
and win over the votes of the free born
electors.
On the day of the fete, for nuuiy miles
nround the country side presented a sing
ular aspect. It seemed as if a deep si
lence and lifelessness Inal suddenly fallen
over the land. Homes and cattle were
no longer visible in the fields, all labor
was suspended, tlie villages, farms and
cottagee w ere deserted alike by young und
old, the doors were Ixilted, the windows
shut down, and the wayfarer would
knock in vain if he wanted to ask what
road to take; there was not a living (.’na
ture anywhere to give him the desired
uiwwer. Every human soul was at Did
lington. and many mine from such u dis
tance that it was late into the following
night when they regained their homes,
carrying with them the jubilee cup and
saucer, which was one of the most cher
ished souvenir* of the celebration.
To the credit of tlie much abused Brit
ish agricultural population lie it said that
there was no evidence of the roughness,
rudeness and inebriety which are sup-
|x«ed to lie their characteristics; there
w as not a single instance of drunkenness,
no noise, no horse plav. A more r«a|wet-
able, orderly, well to oo crowd could not
easily be matched anywhere; on pleasure
bent, they took their pleasure neither
sadly nor riotously, and strange to suy
there was more genuine gratitude and
satisfaction in their hearty and unani
mous farewell cheers to their hosts than
the lower classes of England are popti-
l.u ly sup|icMcd to feel for favors conferred.
On the morrow it was found tluit not a
flower had I wen taken or flower bed
trampled, not a fmit picked; the herons,
fancy fowls, fallow deer and caged eagle
had not been molested; no vestige of tho
passage and sojourn of nearly 7,000 peo
ple remained save the marquees in pro
ws* of removal, und dotted on the iyuhIs
countless baby nocks and shoes dii>pped
like the white |wbbles of Hop o' My
Thumb, and telling of mothers trudging
|iutiei!tly home with their little burdens.
