T. 8. Arthnr'a Mftliod of Writing.
Mr. Arthur saul oi bis manner of writ-
“I do not <-on8tr^;.. a story. My
and characters are not prearranged
individualized. I take one or tw#
characters at some point in life, with the
end but dimly foreslunlowecl- often not
seen at all—and move forward with them.
After that all is simply development or
simply living; nothing comes out as it
seems to promise at any single [>oint in
the story, but everything is subject to
unlooked for modifications and new rela
tions, as if an intelligence more far seeing
than rr»y own was directing the isxiios of
of I he lives I cm portimying. New char
acters suddenly present themselves and
take their places in the story, and become
often the strongest and most influential.
Frequently I do not see the outcome of
mv stories until near the close, and am
often as curious to know what is to be
the future of the characters as any reader
can be, but rarely, if ever, am 1 disap
pointed in the final outcome of the story.
••My work—if I may use the word
work—is always a growth. This l#*ing
so, 1 have no abiding sense of skill. I
never feel as if 1 had any power with iriy
pen—-never feed as if I could write any
thing. I often begin in weakness, forcing
myself to take up my lien, while some
dim ideal floats iu my mind. To fix this
and bring it down into living action seems
an almost imiiossible thing; but as soon
as I fix and localize, touch human life in
its outward action somewhere, a sense of
power is felt, and I seem to become the
subject of new influences, ami am often
as much surprised at the result as any of
iny readers can imssibly be.”—I). L. Mil-
liken in The Writer.

‘•Send oysters to England? I guess we
do. We Rhinped 000 barrels last week and
1.000 barrels tliis wick, and the season i«
only just opening,” said an old oysterman
to a reporter. “Last year we sent 103,000
hnrrcls to Liverpool and Glasgow, and ex
pect to send more than that number this
year. ’ ’
“How are they pac ked?”
“In barrels. Each one contains from
1,200 to 1,000 oysters, placed on edge and
pecked solidly, bo that they cannot shift.
We export Blue Points, Sounds and Rock-
au ays mostly. They don't seem to have
any preference on the other side, but take
any tiling we choose to semi them. It is
only ten years .since the export oyster
trade began, and it has grown rapidly.
Our oysters jmy no duties on the other
side, but have to compete with the native
English oysters and also those imported
from France.”
“Are the English as fond of oysters iu*
w. are?”
“Bless you, no. At least, they don't
eat them ns wo do. This city alone con
sumes more oysters than England, Scot
land and Ireland, and nearly as many as
the whole of Europe. The laboring
classes over there scarcely know the taste
of iui oyster, and the middle classes only
eat them on rare occasions, for they are
considered a luxury. The aristocratic
and wealthy classes are tho only con
sumers.”—New York Mail and Express.

TDOMTf WHEATLEY,
A Custom In Homcnwt.
By a farmer’s door I found a tall
brand) of oak lying against the porch.
The hark was dr}’, and the leaves were
shriveled, hut the l>ough had been origin
ally taken green from the tree. These
boughs are discovered against the door
on the morning of the 29th of May. and
an* in memory of the eseaite of King
Charles from his enemies by hiding in
an oak. The village ringers leave them,
and then go the church and ring a peal,
for which they expect cider or small coin
from each loyal person honored with an
oak branch. Another custom, infinitely
more undent, is that of singing to the
apple trees in early spring, so that the
orchards may he induced to hear a good
crop. The singers come round and visit
each orchard; they have a rhyme s|**ci-
nlly for the purpose, part of the refrain of
whjch is that a cup of good cider cannot
do any one harm, a hint which brings out
a canful. —Richard Jefferies in English
Illustrated Magazine.

The ( hewing Gum Habit.
Victims of the chewing gum habit—a
most detestable one, by the way—some
times apologize for the practice by as
serting that it is wholesome, and is an
actual uid to digestion. Any well in
formed physiologist will deny this at once.
< 'hewing gum produces a flow of saliva
into the stomach at a time when it is not
needed by that organ. This saliva bur
dens tlm stomach and forces it to ab
normal urtinn to get rid of it. and at tl*
same time the salivary glands are robbed
of the secretion, and obliged to do double-
work to produce the saliva necessary for
mastication and digintion. Ho far as the
stomach is concerned, cliewing gum is us
injurious oh chewing tobacco.—Globe
