CANNING FACTORIES.
The Rut-OKiyat has heretofore
railed attention to the profit of can
ning fruits and vegetables, and the
advantages offered by the South for
sueh a business. We yesterday
published an article from the Manu
facturers' Record, showing that It
does not require capital so much as
energy to engage in llic business
and make it profitable. Every year
adds to tbo demand for canned
goods, and there Is no prospect that
the supply will exceed the demand
for many years, and even if sueh a
a time should come the South
would have the advantage in rais
ing fruits and vegetables In greater
abundance and cheaper than the
North can ever hope to. Yet. for
all thla, the Smith purchases all Its
canned goods from the North, and
uses them even more freely than the
section from whieli they come.
We ho|>e and believe the time Is
not far distant when canning fac
tories will be established In this
seetlon, and instead of lieing pur
chasers of this class of goods wc
shall become purveyors. In n few
days we shall have something more
to say on this suhjeet and give some
figures as to the cost of establish,
ing such factories.
