From the way the poor clerks ore
being worked to death one would
judge that this will be a jolly Christ

Christmas coming on Sunday, os it
does—though Monday will be ob

chance to buy their presents and
have the children enjoy them on
Sunday morning. Almost every
store in town lias holiday goods of
some kind, and all are doing a fine
business. The number of people
who come to town every day to buy
goods is simply astonishing, for no
one really knows the great number
of people who make America* their
trading |H>int. We hope all will be
satisfied and have a happy time.

OGLETHORPE.
Richland, Dec. 29.—It haa been
some time since our last letter to
the Recorder, but by Pap’s per
mission we are atile to let yon know
that we are still In the land of the
living. Last week we had some
very disagreeable weather, which
almost put a stop to outdoor work.
Although our country- is “dry,"
when a man goes out iu sueli weath
er as that was and gets wet outside,
if lie is not in the habit of doing
things by halves, he generally fin
ishes up the job, and gets “wet" in
side too. Well, we reckon that is
all right so far as the law is con
cerned, provided he buys his "stuff"
In accordance with the laws regulat
ing tile sale of it. But we do not
like to see a man approach an hon
orable physician, tell himhelsfeel-
ing a little “under the weather,"
and ask him to write a prescription
for him and make it mostly alcohol
with a little innocent coloring mat
ter in it. If his own sense of honor
is not sufficient to deter him from
doing such little tricks, he ought to
think that perhaps the physician
may not be the same kind of man
lie is. He may exense himself as
imlitely as he can, hearing the re
flection that Is east upon him In
order to avoid offending you, but it
does not make it any the less un
pleasant for him to be thus annoyed.
Tlie elegant reception wtileli was
given a* tlie hospitable home of Mr.
Calvin A. Kimbrough, in honor of
visiting young ladies on the even
ing of tlie 15th, wus attended by a
number of invited guests, composed
largely of ladles anil gentlemen
from Richland and Weston, who
were entertained III the most pleas
ant manner imuginnhle by lovely
Miss Myra and her visiting friends.
When the crowd had fairly enjoyed
themselves, as was evidenced by
the sparkling conversation, and
merry peals of laughter, Mr. Kim
brough entered the parlor and in
vited us out to tl\e dining room.
There we found n table that would
have caused the eplcurian gods
themselves to smile. It wus laden
with tlie choicest viands that the
most fastidious taste eould select,
ami it Is needless to say was hugely
enjoyed by everyone present. At a
late hour the guests departed, all
Joining heartily In the opinion that
it was tlie most pleasant social
event that has taken place this sea
son.
We will have a Christmas tree on
Monday night, the 28th. I*t every
body come and put on a present for
Ills wife, his children or his sweet
heart.
The Richland minstrels will give
an entertainment Tuesday night,
aided by I’rof. Huekaby, with his
wonderful ventriloquism and slight
of hand tricks. He will also give a
tight rope performance In the after
noon of the same day. Honnie.

Why It I* Written Xma«.
Tlie Albany News gives the fol
lowing reasou for writing Christmas
with au X:
“Cliristmas derives Its name from
Christ, anil Is the anniversary of his
birth. The similarity or appro
priateness of the use of the X find*
explanation in the fact that Christ
bore the cross and was crucified
upon it. The letter X being a cross
or more nearly representing it than
any other of the alphabet, It is
sometimes used to designate tlie
the word Christ."
