The next presidential campaitrn
will be an agRreasive one on the part
of the Democrats.
Reference to the war records in
Washington show thatOeorgia sent
about 1.71,<100 men to the field, dur
ing the late war. That was a mighty
big nrmy of itself.
The Democrats, in previous presi
dential campaigns, have lost ground
on the tariff question by trying to
straddle the fence. Next year they
will all be on one side and there will
lie a forward movement.
AMERICUS IS PLEASED.
In a dispatch from (Savannah, re
garding tile coming election of
directors of the Central road, which
will take place January 2nd, we
IIlid the following paragraph :
since the last election the Inmnn family
has been welcomed Into the <'entr.il house-
holtl. Perry Belmont 1* also ii lnr*e slmre-
holtler. These powerful fnm jlles do not »m-
lieve in capitalizing without repreaenta-
tlon. In consequence of thin ptlnclp'.c, It
Iihh been decided that Samuel M. Iimnin
and Hutch T. In man, of Atlanta, and Wul
ter Luttgen, of New York, the young part
ner of l’crry Belmont, -ahull have Deal*
around the directors’ board. This means
that three of the present director* will not
continue in office. Who they will l»e lias
been a question of much speculation lately.
Mean. C. II. Phlnlay, of Atlanta, ami <’. R.
Woods and Henry Blun, of Kavannnh. ire
named an the gentlemen who will not serve
during the coming yenr. The tieket made
up In New York recently Is represented to
be ha follows: K. P. Alexander. Samuel M.
Inman, Hugh T. Inman, Walter Luttgen.
K. M. Green. .1. J. Wilder. .1. K. Garnett, A.
E. MUU, Abraham Vetahurg, Patrick Cal
houn, U. B. Ilarrold, II. B. Holfimi and
John C. Calhoun. Thin will give Hn\ animli
six, New York three, Atlanta three, and
Amerlcus one director. It It not likely t Sint
this ticket will be altered by the majority
which owns Central stock, though a goal
deal of negotiation and diplomacy I* mm
at work to effect the change.
The fact that .Mr. l\ 11. Hurrold,
of this city, is to be retained on the
board of director* is very gratifying
to the people of Americus, not mere
ly on account of local pride, but be
cause he has brought about a more
pleaHunt feeling between our people
mid the Tentral than had existed for
many years. It is well known that
under the old management of the
roud there existed a bitter feeling of
animosity between our people and
the officers of that road, which
caused loss to both shies. Under
the new management, ami by reason
of Mr. Harrold’s position on the
Hoard of Directors, this feeling Ims
been dissipated and there now
exists the most amicable relations.
The result has been advantageous
to both sides, the ruilroad company
increasing its business and the |m*o-
ple securing hetteraceominodations.
There are several important rea
sons why Mr. Ilarrold should be re
tained in his present position. In
the extension of the H. V. & K.
road to Columbus, Amerlcus would
become an important junction, and
even now it does the largest freight
business on the t 'entrai outside of
Savanuali, Atlanta and Macon. The
building of the A. P. At L. road lias
greatly increased the traffic on the
< 'entrui at this point, as Ims also the#
changing of the H. V. & E. road to
tills point. The fact that the cotton
receipts of Americus have nearly
doubled tills season, alone shows the
increase in our traffic. The geo
graphical position of Americus
in reference to the Central lines
makes it a point at which it con
serves the interests of the road
to have some one immediately con
nected with its management located.
For these reasons we arc pleased
to see that the prospect is favorable
for Mr. Harrold's retention on the
lioard of directors, and ho|>e that no
complications may arise which will
deprive Americus of its representa
tion on the board.
It will be remembered that in the
last Congress Hon. John M. Martin,
tlie representative of the 0th (or
Birmingham) district of Alabama,
voted with Mr. Kandait and the
Itepnbiicnns to prevent the consid
eration of the democratic tariff re
duction bill reported from tin* com
mittee of Ways and Means. Mr.
Martin was afterwards beaten for
the nomination for member of the
present congress by Mr. Bankhead;
hut the Birmingham protection pa
per insisted tii^t Mr. Bankhead en
tertained the same tariff views as
those of his predecessor, Mr. Mar
tin. Mr. Bankhead has clearly de-
lincd hi* own position, in an inter- |
view the other day, In which he
said: “The tariff should be reduc
ed, and if I cannot have the reduc
tion made as I would like, and u|K»n
tiie methods 1 would like to see
employed, I am willing to take what
I can get. If we cannot get ail we I
want in this congress, I am in favor j
of doing the best we can ; then per- ;
haps it will act as an incentive to j
do something in the right direction #
in the next.”
There is a man in the Kansas j
penitentiary who, beginning with a
term at Sing Sing years ago, lias
served his time in regular succes
sion in the penitentiaries of New I
York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Miehi- j
gun, Indianu, Illinois ami Kansas. j
The canning of fruit and vegeta
bles is getting to be an immense
business. In Maine alone there arc
eighty canning factories. There
should he more of these factories
throughout the South.
Norvin Green estimates Jay
Gould’s fortune at $60,000,000. This
