THE HOUSE COMMITTEE.
It is now generally understood
that Mr. Carlisle will make Mr,
Mills, of TexaH, chairman of the
ways and means committee; Mr.
Randall, of the appropriation com
mittee; Mr. Heott, of the banking
committee; Mr. Bland, of Missouri,
of the coinage, weights ami meas
ures; Mr. Belmont, foreign affairs;
Mr. Blount, post-offices and |x>-d-
roads; Mr. Wheeler, millltary uf
fairs; Mr. Crisp, of the election
committee. The ways and means
committee will consist of Mills,
Cox. Kelley, Breckenridge, of Ken
tucky, McMillian, Browne, Iteed,
McKenley, and, Oay, and McAdo.
COTTON STATEMENT.
From the Chronicle’s cotton urti-
ticle of December 23, the following
facts are gathered relative to the
movement of the crop of the past
week.
For the week ending this even
ing, December 23, the total receipts
have reached 202,859 tiales, against
213,902 bales last week, 240,011) bales
the previous week and 284,Hl« bales
three weeks since; making the total
receipts since the 1st of September,
1887, 3,796,728 bales against 3,519,180
bales for the same period of 1880,
showing an increase since Septem
ber 1, 1887, of 277,-548 bales.
The receipts of all tlm interior
towns for this week have been 141,-
225 hales. Last year the receipts of
the same week were 180,931 bales.
The old Interior stocks have in
creased during the week 5,351 bales
and are to-night 71,122 bales more
than at the same period lust year.
The receipts at the same towns
have been 15,735 bales more than the
Bamu week last year, and since
September 1, the receipts at nil
t he towns are 234,328 halos more
than for the same time in 1888.
The total receipts from the plan
tations since September 1, 1887, are
4 278,574 bales; in 1888 were 3,»l>4,-
851 bales; in 1885 were 3,922,859
bales.
Alt hough the receipts at the out-
ports the past week were 202,859
bales, the actual movement from
plantations wus 209,188 bales, the
balance being tukeu from the stocks
at the interior towns. laist year
the receipts from the plantations
for the same week were 305,828 bales,
and for 1885 they were 280,218 bales.
The imports in continental |H>rts
this week have been 53,000 bales.
The figures Indicate an decrease
In the cottou in sight to-night of
97,241 bales as compared with the
same date of 1888, an increase of
89,383 as compared with the corres
ponding date of 1885, and u de
crease of 105,084 as compared with
1884.
