4. Gridin No. 1, of Gridin.
6. Stonewall, of Gridin.
After the parade was over the
companies all dispersed, and the
great, surging mass of people began
crowding Into the grand stand. The
crowd in the city was variously es
timated at from 0,000 to 10,000 peo
ple, some very enthusiastic people
even going higher than that. A
conservative estimate puts the
crowd at about 8,000, and wo don’t
think those dgures will miss it very
far. Both grand stands were dlled,
and preparations were made to scat
3,000 people in them. The short

The track was in bad condition
when the Wide-Awakes ran. The
heavy rains of the day or so before
had thoroughly soaked It, and
though a scraper was put on early
In the morning, aud made ns good
as could be, it was a very damp aud
licavy track until about 2 o’clock
when the sun had been at work on
It for about an hour. It Is thought
the heavy track lessened the plug
time at least half a second.
Much cheering as there was as the
boys reached the track! A quiet
spectator would have thought that
Bedlam had broken loose, and peo
ple jumped up and danced and hal
loed, and swung their hnts, and
hugged their nearest neighbor, and

were entirely drowned out. This

them, bless thorn, have made sooh

gentlemanly manner, as to more

not have this morning just lor
the asking.
But this Is not tolling our hungry
readers about tbe tournament.
At least 10,000 people looked out
upon tho sky with a palpitating
heart yesterday morning, for two
days before the clouds hod been
dropping tbelr dewy loads and east
ing angry glances down on Mother
Earth, and when daylight came yes
terday morning It still found the
usually blue heavens over-cast with
lowering clouds, and a damp and
chilly wind was blowing. But not
withstanding all this at an early
hour the streets ol our city began to
fill up rapidly, and every train,
from every direction, brought iu
many hundreds more.

THE WIDE-AWAKE’S RUN.
It was fully 12 o’clock when the
Wide-Awake squad got ready to
run, as they had to don their run
ning sulta after the parade, wash
the dirt oir.and primp up generally.
They were the lucky recipients of
quiet once more.

last, when the signal was given,

Jimmie McGarrah ready for it. The
flag came down, and the magnlfl-

months old company, a record never
oxcolled In the South. You can bet
that there was some cheering about
that time, and Wide-Awakes Joined
In with a will. Such good time
gave them a good chance of secur
ing the second prize in first test.

They met a mishap on the second
tost, and busted.
THE DAWSON HOYS.
The Dawson company enmo ou
the ground feeling cool and confl
dent. They had made ns good time
as was on tbe board In practice, and
they felt like they could do it right
then. The track was fast getting
bettor, aud they bud had a good
rest. They made a beautiful ap
pearance as they Inarched up the
track ln.their shiny running suit,
which was white tights, blue velvet
trunks and sailor collar bristling all
over with silver spangles. They
got In position, got a good swing,
and away they went down the

test, the boys determined to get even
on the second ono. They made a
splendid ruu, pretty connections,
and lowered the Deg in IS seconds.

Now came tho famous "git tliar"
company, Griffin No. 1. They ran
with a beautiful new two wheel
blcyole reel; called In flreinanie
parlance, a “Jumper,” and the
Wide-Awakes were walklngaround
with trembling, hearts. The run
ning suits of this company were red
knee pants with wlilto stripe down'
the side, white shlrteand stockings
and bluma caps. They came down
the track In a beautiful manner, be
ing loudly applauded by the Htonc-
walls, made connection at engine,
but a buret at the pipe. They wore
very sorrowful faces, but no ono
crowed over them In tbe least,

in a “do or die’’ manner, and again

A great cheer went up from their
admirers, for everything was done
so neatly that It was thought the
Wide-Awakes’ tirno was beat. A
short consultation among the times
keepers and Mr. Mack marked
down 28 for thorn, 13 secouds to tbe
plug.
They made a splendid run In tho

man were entertalnsd in Wide-
Awake hall by the home companies,
and there were speeches and con
gratulations on all sides and a gen
eral love feast. The defeated re
joiced with tho victors and the vic
tors consoled thedefeated, while all
drank to tho hop? ef another meet
ing.
RECEPTION OF GRIFFIN COMPANIES.
The two companies from Grlffln,
Grlffln No. 1 and Stonewall No. 2,
arrived at»:40 Tuesday night. They
were met at the depot by both the
Americus companies and escorted
to the Wide-Awake hall, where the
addresses of welcome were made
and accepted.
A large number of friends came
with the Grlffln companies, and
when they had all crowded Into the
hall It was packed. Ae soon as
quiet was restored Mr. J. C. Mat
thews delivered the address of wel
come In behalf of theT. Wheatleys.
The visiting companies were de
lighted with the way in whleb they
were treated by Americus. At a
meeting of the Judges yesterday
afternoon the representative of vis-
ltlng companies expressed muoh
love and good feeling for our boys. .

THE GALLANT STONKWAME.
This gallant company, like Its
honored and revered god-father, is
a battle scarred veteran of tourna
ments, though the past two years
they have rested on their laurels.
They were much admired and
feared. So for the Wide-Awakes
were ahead, with the Wheatleys
right after them, but no one on the
ground felt very safe, and was anx
ious for this company to run. Their
reel and hose was put in condition,
and then Wide-Awake Band went
down to Allen Honse and marched
them up. There were a splendid
looking set of fellows, dressed In
blue knee pants, red stockings,
striped shirts and red cap. From
ths hearty and prolonged cheering
which greeted them It seemed' that
they were great favorites with the
masses. They wero cheered from
ono end of the track to the otlmr.
