Mr. Norwood’* letter, reviving
the old charges of felling out against
Gov. Gordon, lias started the ball
rolling. Editor Turner of the Al
bany Nqwb and Advertiser says
that the late Henry Grady made
the following explanation of Goi-
don’s resignation in his (Turner’*)
presence:
"I know more about that than
anybody. In fact, I was the cause
of Gov. Gordon’s retirement from
the Senate. It was this way: I was
then in New Yorx and was making
plenty of money out of Victor New
comb,' the presldeut’of the L. and
•N. road. I bad frequently talked
with Gov. Gordon, who told me
that most of his salary went to old
soldiers who nude appeals to him.
and he had intimated to me several
times that he intended to resign.
“Wlillo I was making money out
of Newcomb It occurred to me that
I might get a good position for
General Gordon, and after conferr
ing with him he agreed to appoint
the General as his legal adviser on
a salary of $14,000 a year. I Im
mediately telegraphed Gov. Gor
don to come to New York to see
* He met me there shortly after and
there I told him of my plans. ‘But,’
he amid, ‘Congress will adjourn in
three weeks. Suppose I wait until
then to resign?’ No* you must re
sign at once or you can’t secure the
position, I told ultn, and telegraph

get along well together, end after a
very short service with him re
signed hit position and returned to
Georgia.”
The Atlanta Constitution publish
ed yesterday a communication
signed •“Bubtreasury,” in which is
embodied the following:
"Four years ago the master hand
of Grady swung him through Geor
gia la the wake of Jeff* Davis, and
•very resource of Grady’s great
brain and every beat of his noble
heart was set on Gordon’s election.
Under hie magic touch powerful
oommittees sprang up in Gordon’*
Interest; couriers were sent in ad
vance and the train which bore the
“conquering hero” bad to stop at
every station for the masses to see
him and lavish their plaudits upon
him and load his car with flowers.
He swept tbe State. The gallant
Grady naa left us, but not till be
reaped bis harvest of iugratitude
from the man who ought to have
died, If neceeeary, by him, Whet
la Gordon’s good right arm in this
present conflict? Where ie now the
S owerfuicommittee? the ovations,
owers and plaudits? where the
grand oratlone of Gordon, sweeping
down powerful competitors? win
the dash, the enthusiasm?”
