PUBLIC MEETING.
THE CITIZENS OF AMERICUS ASSEM
BLE IN THE COURTHOUSE.
An Enthuiiaatio Meeting Which Takei
Steps for the Organisation of Enter
prise and Capital.
It was announced in The Recok
deb yesterday morning that a pub
lio meeting would be held at live
o'clock yesterday afternoon In the
Opera House.
Tho meeting was called by Ool
H. H. Hawkins, and it was stated
that tho big deal reported In the
Constitution of the day before was
the object fer whicli the meeting
was called. About noon, it was^au-
nounced by printed circulars dis
tributed over tho city, that the hour
of meeting had been changed to
four c'olock, and would be held in
the county court room instead of
the opera house.
It was several minutes past four
o’clock when a large number of
citizens, representing the best flnau
dal and enterprising talent of
Americus, assembled in the county
court room In the new court house.
' After the meeting was called to
order Mr. T. Wheatley was elect
ed chairman, and Mr. W. A.
Dodson Appointed secretary.
The chairman requested Col. 8.
H. Hawkins to state the object of
the meeting.
Col. Hawkins arose and in a brief
speech set forth his reasons for har
ing called the meeting, and what
was expected to be accomplished
by it.
He said that several months ago
anellbrthad been made to bring
together • an organization which
would combine the best-effort and
judgment of tho city of Americus,
having in view the material devel
opment and prosperity of the dity.
But owing to some cause,a lack of
interest on tho part of the citizens,
and other things, all efforts In that
direction had failed, and tho enter
prise had come to nothing.
He said that frequent expressions
of regret for Its failure had come to
him of late from leading cltlsens
who desired that some organization
which would bring together in
united effort the latent enterprise,
energy and capital of the city
should be ©fleeted, aud through the
agenoy of which property might be
bongbt, sold and Improved, enter
prises of all kinds developed and an
Impetus given to the progress of
the city In all m aterlal lines.
He regretted tbo • appearance
the report in Che Can*
Btltution about the purchase by him
of the Americus Elect! 1c Street
Hallway, as no such trade bad been
made. He said he thought that it
would be much better for the people
of Americus to own the street rail!
road thau-to leate It in the - hands
of the Nqw Volk. Contract Com
pany.
He had negotiated with tbo New
York Contract Company in regard
to their property In Americus, and
that company had given him a
prioe, but nothing more had been
or oouid be accomplished.
He said that he was willing to go
forward in the work of organising
a company which would have for
Its object the controlling of the
street railroad- and perhaps the
ot^er property of lbs New York
tract Company and -thr up
building of Americus, and he hoped
the oltltens would heartily co-op
erate with him.
Wheu Co). Hawkins resumed his
seal Mayor Felder was called for,
and responded by saying that he
would be glad to seo the people of
Americus become the owners of the
property spoken of. He said he
knew somebody was going to make
big money out of the property, and
he much preferred that tjie people
of Americus should make It.
He hoped that some organisation
of capital and effort would place the
people of Americus/In possesion of
the Electric Car tine, the property
of the Electric Light and Power
Company, and the Leeton Land
Company. ^ ; > r *- i
Mr. M. Callaway followed Mayor
Felder ;and made a few strong re
marks according with the senti
ments expressed by the two pro
ceeding speakers.
A call was then made for Mr. H.
Clay Bagley.
Mr. Baglsy, after some moments,
arose at his seat and said that he
was in hearty accord with the een-
tlment which had been expressed,
bat bad no specific plans to submit
to the meeting. He, as an Individ?
naif would co-operate heartily wlllr
any effort In the direction indi
cated. He said it would require a
large amount of money and vfork
to accomplish the desired results,
but thought Americus amply equal
to the emergency.
The chair then stated that inas
much as there seemed to be no well
defined liuo of action it seemed best
to appoint a committee to outline
some definite plans.
Mr. Bagley moved that the chair
appoint a committee of five to form<
ulate a line of action, and that the
committee be granted power
open subscript!^ books
if they saw fit, or to organize com
panies, or take whatever steps thoy
might deem fit for the accomplish
ment of the end in view.
The chair asked to be allowed
time for selection of the comittee,
stating that they would be an
nounced later.
Mr. M. Calloway then introduced
the following resolutions:
Itesoiveu, Thut this gathering, as
citizens of . Americus, hall with
pleasure the proposed plan that will
give to home energy and capital
tho prof>ertv and franchises or tho
New York Contract Company, and
that we will hall with still greater
pleasure the vestiug in a home
company of all the uutmprovcd
property in the city, believing as
we do that such a result would bring
only good results in its train.
Resolved further, That we pledge
our hearty support to both moves,
and that we earnestly call on all our
eople to give tho matter their un-
aalified and undivided moral and
nanclal support.
After the introduction aud adop
tion of the resolution the meeting
adjourned.
Late yesterday afternoon Chair
man Wheatley announced the fol
lowing committee:
Col. S. H. Hawkins, B. P. Hollis,
H. Clay Bagley, Arthur Itylander,
and W. M. Hawkes. Of this com
mittee Col. 8. H. Hawkins Is
chairman.
Tills committee, vested with such,
liberty of action and energy and
enterprise, will go to work at once.
It is highly probable that this
body of ablo and Industrious work
ers in the progress of Americus will
in a very short time be prepared to
announce to the people the gratify
ing intelligence that the. ear line
and the Electric Light and Power
Works, as well ae the Leeton-Land
ompany’n property, will become

McRae, Ga., September 25.—A
crowd of two thousand strong is
here to hear Gordon speak.
The occasion is the presentation

Great enthnslasm was shown here
over Gordon last night and this
morning. At 1:15 o’clock, ffit train
was met by au enthusiastic crowd,
while tho band in tho McRae hotel
piazza played tbe martial and stirrf
riog air of "Dixie.” The governor
was escorted to the hotel aud was
here made quite a hero of, as If he
had not been that often enough,

Neither Norwood, Nortlieu , nor

Governor Gordou Is speaking at

weather has brightened up. A tre
mendous crowe Is here and are re
ceiving him with unparalleled en
thuslasm. Nothing political in
the speech. It is simply an accept
ance of tho warehonse from the
A. M. road, and a rosponso for the
Alliance of Telfair county. No
need for political spoaktug hero.
Telfair and the adjoining counties
present aq unbroken front for Gor
don. Thtore Is hardly a dissenting
vote In this seotion. The people
and their legislative nominees are
solid for Gordon and cannot bo
moved from that faith.
There Is disappointment as to the
Interest of the mooting hero, as
Norwood was not present.

How many bouses aft needed?
Every day we hear the unceaalng
cry for houses, moro room, mora
places for business, aud more placet
to live, In fact, more room for every
thing.
Hut how much room, how many
store* and haw many dwelling
houses does Americus need?
Well, this is a hard question to
answer. Two of the oldest cltlsens
of Amoricus tried to answer, jtjfor
themselves yesterday.
One of them laid that ha believed
mora than one hundred ttot* fcaoi
could be rented at once If Americus
had them, and he thought that over
three hundred residence* might.be
filled within two wreaks.
The first man urged that there
was nothing needed more than
•tore loom*, because, said bs, men
want some place, for business.
Bull ness la tbe anchorage which
holds any man to a place, and If he
Is satisfactorily situated In A'bust
ness way, It Is qot a hard matter to
get him located and make of him a
permanent oitlsen. •» ' !u
The other insisted that what'Was
wanted was houses to live in,
dwellings of alt kinds, because men
of all classes tome to the city, ids-
siring to make their homes here,
and commence work.
They both agreed that if .the
houeea were hare, both store rooms
and' dwellings, sufficient to supply
the-demand, that mora than
thousand paopW. would list add
to the city’s popnlatlou'fn test thl
