Oeerxia’s Phosphate Plod.
Prom Dlilo.
Last month the Slate Goologtet
of Georgia made hie drat-report
■luce tha organisation of tbs Geor
gia Geological Du real-. The report
waeou the subject <1 the phos
phate beds recently discovered In
.Thomas county. The report, after
giving the locality of tin. ftndi and
tlielr possible extent, says: “The
mineral Is lathe form of uodulee,
varying la else up to masses of 100
pounds or more. The color le yari
able, varying from white to yellow,
brown and green. The nodules of
ten make up 60 |>cr cent, or more
of the bed, which sometimes reach
es a thickness of over teu feel.
Id the bed with the mineral, flinty
nodules oommonly occur, and even
the two minerals are commingled^
The phosphates are underlaid by
flinty beds, and these rest upon
llmeetone. The geological age of
these underlying fllute and lime
stones la lower mlocene. This was
determined by the foaalls which I
collected In Ihv rocks and referred
to Dr. W. H. bail, of Washington.
Tbo phosphates are newer and eoc-
tain frtgmantspftbeolderebelle. In
fact, both the flints and phosphates
were ouce beds of limestone, eub-
et-qucully converted Into the sec
ondary form. Thus It Is found that
the geological position of the phos
phate beds of Thomas county is the
same as that ot some ef the Florida
dopoalts. The phosphate ; beds are
lenticular, and He more or leu In
pockets, some of which are of large
■Ice. U-.-ildes those deposits seen,
the mineral le said to ucpqr along
the Aiicilla Creek aud at other
places nml at considerable depth.
I*mnd» several qualitative teste of
tbs ore, but have df pended for per
centages upon Mr. MeCaudleas’.
analysis of Mr. J- nes’e samples.
The reports show hone phosphates
up to from DOtote per cent. The
percentage of clay Is low as also tbe

Inge, ,a* tbe'.lrpn imloratlous are

of the Charleston doposlta. Water
lsne*r«ibao<L" Mr. Spencer furth
er says that though tbe Tbomu
county phosphate le limited In tbe
breadth of the.deposit there seems
to be no reason why ($ jshould be
limited lu 'length. The near futu
