THE COTTON CROP.
Borne Tuts About This Tear’s Crop.
REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS.
As the cotton crop Is the most lop
portantcropln the South, undone
of the greatest In Importance to ths
world' in general, a large produc
tion of the fleecy staple Is a sign of
great prosperity throughout the en-
tire oodntry.
The crop of last year was seoAd
to the largest erop ever made lutbe
United States, and the crop of this
year bids fair to exceed that of last
year.
The total warehouse leeelptsat
Amerlcus for last year to October
21st, 1889, amounted to 21,618 bales,
while the warehouse receipts of
this year up to Oetobsr 21st, 1890,
amount to 81,468 bales, making an
lnoreaae of 9,966 hales over last
year's orop ao far.
There is still a great deal of cot
ton In the fields ready for picking.
A prominent planter, In conversa
tion with one of our reporters yes
terday, said that nearly half the
crop was yet to be gathered. If this
Is true, the orop of this year w.lll be
enormous beyond any one's fonaest
anticipations..
The farmers are laboring under
many difficulties In the gathering
of the cotton crop, tbs principal of
whloh are the lack of cotton pick
rs.
The difficulty In securing cotton
pickers is due to several causes.
The crop of this year is excep
tionally large, aod more bauds are
needed to plok It than there were
the year previous, and as no more
can be had, consequently there Is a
shortage of “plokers.”
Quite a large number of darkles
having farmed for themselves this
year, as they have their own cotton
to plok, have neither time or Incli
nation to pick cotton for others.
The large number of factories,the
great amount of railroad oonstruo-
tlon, the number of new houses be
ing Arected, jmd hundreds of new
enterprises wbioh were not hero
some time ago, are here now, and
by paying good wages for labor they
deprive the farmer of his cotton
plofcAs, who would rather have a
steady position than to pick-cotton.
The recant rains have damaged while on his rounds yesterday a
the crops to a considerable extent met one of Americas’ t*> ( t

It Is to hoped, however, that not
withstanding the many difficulties
that have been, and will still be
undergone In the marketing of this
year’s crop, but little of the crop
-will be lost, and that with a fair

Ob Friday evening, October 31st,
Carter's; great melodrama, "The
Fast Mail" will be produced at
Glover’s opera honse. This drama
and oompany has created the great
est furore of any play In twenty
years. We dip the following from
the St. Louis Repoblio, of Septem
ber 28th:
'The popularity of Pope’s was
put into extreme test yesterday
afternoon. The thermometer reg
istered 94 In the shade, and yet a
top-heavy honse took enough Inter
est in "The Fast.Mall" to defy the
weather and enjoy the play. “The
Fast Mall" le-new to St. Louis and
ltoaugbttbefavorutthe audience
from Abe first. It abounds In thrill
ing situations and a somewhat in
tricate plot is worked out to s
happy Angle. Miss Louise Lord as
Mary Martin, the heroine of the
piece, brings to her aid thorough
training for the role she assumes.
Her support is uniformly, good.
Some of the scenic effects produced
during the play are wonderfully re-
alistlo. The Niagara Falls—tons
of water rolling over real cascades
and a train of cars on the stage are
but two of many features that go
to enbanoe the interest.« The cast
includes Mr. G. Neaville, Mr. F.
Peters, Harry Mack, B. A. Thomas,
Morris FUnn, B. H. Graybam, Mr.
Thornton, B, W. Williams, Otto
Wright, L. Sculy, T. Logan, Miss
Nina Gordon and Miss Urayham.
Pope deserves and will no doubt
receive a liberal patronage during
the week."
