Of course it will be easy for the
mauafaclurcr or wholesale mer
chants to add ou his 15 per cent, to
save himself from loss, and almost
as easy for the retail merchant to
do the samd and perhaps add on 16
per cent, more while lie is abusing
McKinley and thetarill. But thlre
the mnttei slops ami the poor con
sumer has to bear Iho whole loss.
He may squirm and complain and
go from house to house, but Is met
at every door with the same ex
cuse for high prices and must final
ly submit. Thus it will be seen that
the McKinley bill, while Is I* a
disg.’uce and a curse to the whole
country, its burdens fall heaviest
and almost entirely upon the poorer
classes and those least able to bear
them. The colored people consti
tute a largo majority of the |»oor
people of the South and will suffer
most from the effects of this iniqui
tous measure. And thus the Re
publicans are systematically rob
bing those whom they profess to
befrieud and protect.
One night last last week a thief

room and departed westward. Next
morning Mr. Newkirk and Mr.
Jack Riley tracked him beyond
Cuthbert, where they found the
mare and cart and returned home.
The thief is supposed to t>e Bob
Aycoek, a while man who escaped
from Jail here the night before the
theft was committed.
