SWaT The executive committee met yesterday, and decided to hold a primary election on Nov. 21st, for county offices. This is a good move, and one which satisfies all. It haa been several years since the Democrats chose the men for these places, and the result haa been in many cases, a big scramble for these offices. Announcements have been made this year for the various offices, and in almost every usse, there is opposition. To prevent another scramble, the committee decided to bold a primary, and set the date above mentioned. This is a good move, one which satisfies all, and everybody praises the action taken. The committee also discussed the matter of getting the Democrats out to vote next Tuesday, and each member pledged himself to do his best to have a full vote polled. PATCALHOUN MAY BE BEFORE THE LEGISLATURE. Th* C*ndid*t** Di»ou***d-Gordon 1 Cbsnce*-WM Calhoun B* sCandidat* For Senator? flpads' Vi RacoansiL Atlanta, Oot. 81.—Next Wed nesday tb* legislature meets! This foot la kept In view by the political talk about town, the candidates Impressing It the more forcibly as the time draws nearer. The Senatorablp la nearly the ab sorbing topic. It Is talked every where. The conspicuous part as signed Pat Calhoun In the Alliance day programs has almost settled tbe conviction that his friends are at work to make him senator. It haa looked that way for some time, but the past day or two has added the impression that a number of the most prominent Alllanoe leaden are in sympathy with the move ment- Of oourse the talk about Pat Cal houn or the Terminal "owning” or buying” the bell-weathers Is cam paign talk; but this new-born Inti macy of the big political monopoly —the Alliance—ie calculated to cre ate some natural suspicion. There is no discounting tbe fact that Pat Calhoun ia one of the brainiest young men In the South, and that he is personally an hon orable and public spirited man. But while that is true, very few poople—except those with political Interests concerned—would like to sec him In the United States Senate, The situation recalls the old story of the traveler that stopped late one evening mt the house of a lone widow, and asked to stay all night. No,” said tb* widow, "I am all aione UeTe.” "But, madam, I’m a preacher.” "I’ve no doubt,” eald the widow, for you look like a good man—but you're a man.” And while Pat Calhoun la a good man, there la perfectly natural and wholly unavoidable popular dis trust opposed to hia candidacy—not of the man, perhaps, but of bit pro fession and Maociatlons. Gordon’s friends are more hope ful of the Governor's election since the qnasl-csndldeoy of Pet Cal houn. They aay that the Alllanoe vote cannot be delivered to him In bulk, and that In event he la urged hy the Alllanoe leaders as their candidate, enough votes will go to Gqrdon to elect him. Which le a shallow calculation- very! It la much mors probable, Just on general principles, that the All!- will risk their vlotory on no one man’s success until they have previously ascertained In canons that he can be elected. There are six candidates for Bpeaker: Howell, of Fulton, Cal vin, of Richmond, Flemiug, of Richmond, Berner, of Monroe, Jackson, of Heard, and Cutts, of Sumter. A Jot of good men!
