THOMASVILLES BOULEVARD.
Much hat been said and written
In Georgia about good roads, but
very Bttle has been done. If the
civilization of a country Is to be
gauged by the couditlous of the
roads, as some have maintained,
then Georgia and the Kouth gen
erally will moke Put an Indifferent
showing. Tbonilaville, has how-
ever, set a good example to Thomaa
county. The city has, at It* owu
cost, constructed a fiuc circular
drive thirty feet wide entirely
arouud itself. It is au average
distance of two miles from
the center of Thomas vllte,
**d about twelve miles In clr-
cumv, reQCe j t | B iu first-class
driving •sedition by the city, and
l* known a* "Boulevard.” By
means of it plra*., ( , drivers uever
find It necessary to -q uril n, #
route they weut. Tber*
ant drives radiating from
vllie iu nil direcllvus like spoke* , fJ
a great wheel. One can drive out
in any one of these to the boulevard,
by which they can pass to tha next
and tbeu return to tjw city. The
boulevard l* very popular, end
destined some day to be lined oa I to
margin* •with many . beautiful
home*. It Is also very fitting that
Thomaavllle should lead her section
In tha very Important matter of
roads. The boulevard will tbua be
worth nUny tlmaa Ita boat as an «•

Bi ti.kk, Ga, Oct. 30.—What
promitcH to be a very Interesting
lawsuit will be Instituted shortly
against the Georgia Southern and
Florida railroad and against tbe
township of Vienna in Dooly
county. Kupertor Court HallIff
James lloilis will *ue the railroad
for 125,000, and a suit will he filed
agaiut Vienna for a sum of half as
large. He has Just returned from
Vieuiia, where, h« claims, he was
detained forty hours by the town
authorities <>u a charge preferred
by Die Georgia Hmitheru and Flori
da railroad of a*vault witli intent
to murder. He says that he was
ejected from the train, although
he paid his fare, and he isgoiug to
make them pay lively for it. A
week ago he left Butler with a.drove
of horses to be disposed of In
Vienna. Reaching the second
station above Vienna he sent the
horses through the ojuntry, and he
went down on the train to get a
place lu which to keep his stock.
He was unable, he says, to purchase
a ticket at the station. The agent
told him twice he could not sell bim
one. Hollis, replied, “Alll right;
I will not pay more than 3 cents *
mile, then,” and got on the train.
He said that the conductor of tbe
train wns standing near the agent
aud heard the agent tell Hollis that
no ticket could be sold him.
Hollia handed the conductor the
price of a ticket when lie came
through the car, but the conductor
told him it waa not enough, and If
Hollis refused to pay conductors
rates to Vienna after reaching the
next station, he would be put off.
Hollis said all light, he would pay
no more.
When the station wa* reached
the conductor came Hi rough the
car and asked Hollis for fare.
Hollis refused to pay any more, and
when the train jdarted the
ductor pulled the bell line and told
Hollie to get off.
‘‘You will have to put tne off by
force,” replied Hollis.
“Well, come on them,” t
ductor replied, aud he seized Hollia
by the collar, lie pulled HoJJIi
and ted him out the door, down the
s’eps, on the ground.
When tbe tra>u started Hollie
Jumped aboard aud said, “Now, I’ll
pay my fare.” Before the conduc
tor came for the fare, however,
Hollis changed his min t, and when
the conductor called for the fare
Hollis refused again to pay any
more. The conductor called his
crew ami togqjher they were about
to throw Hollis off when he promis
ed to pay IDs fare again. He hand
ed the conductor $6 too much, he
said; and the conductor refused to
give back the change. Hollis said:
“If you are thief enough to ateal It
for the railroad all right, keep It.”
Whereupon the conductor tosaed
the money back to Hollis, saying:
“Here's yonr money, uow get off of
this train.” Hollis said that
gro traiu hand attempted to eject
him, and the conductor flaunted a
revolver In Ills face. Hollis then
drew his knife and backed against
the side of the car to defend himself.
Ho kept the men away from him
until the train reached Vienna.
When the train stopped ho dis
mounted and the conductor called
out to the marshal to arrest Hollis
for attempting to cut him.
The marshall arrested Hollis and
held him forty hours upon a charge
of assault with intent to murder.
Hollis contends that the oouductor
had no authority to eject him when
the fare was paid. That the
ductor had no right to throw the
money back to him and put him off.
He said that he did not draw his
knife until ihe conductor flaunted
the weapon iu Ills face. As to his
claim against the city, he said that
If* crime waa committed It waa
committed several roilaa from Vi-
ANNOUNCEMENTS.

township had uo right to bold him
for It. He was defended in bia
preliminary bearing before
mayor by Col. Wooten, wbo will be
associated with R. P. Hollis, Rsq.,
of Amerieus, against tbe railroad
and town. Thirty-seven thousand
dollar* is not a small
Hollis is sure that he has first-rate
cases agsiust both.
The railroad sent witnesses to
Vienna iu the preliminary bearing,
aud It Is understood that the cage,
assault with Intent to murder,
against Hollis, will be pushed vig

of property In this county, and is a
