Lightning Put an Angel on a Portrait.
A portrait of the late John Taylor,
which J. H. Smith hag ou exhibition in
Ida store, attracts many visitors daily,
and lias caused a great deal of discus
sion. The portrait formerly rested
tho inantelpfeco at Mr. Smith's residence
at Mount Olivo. Recently, 4 Qr i n tf a
heavy storm, a lightning flash struck it.
Tho frame was demolished, but tho flash
left oa tho portrait a clearly defined
picture of an angel with outstretched
wings overshadowing Mr. Taylor’s head,
tho arms encircling his neck and the
right hand holding a bunch of flow
The i>o8© of tho angel suggests protection
and benediction. Tho dark line show
ing tho lightning’s journey along the
cardboard turns abruptly just above tho
face of Mr. Taylor, giving the spectator
tho idea that tho angel changed tho
lightuing's com so.
Superstitious people consider it ni an
indication that Mr. Taylor is in heaven,
but Mr. Smith explains the phenomenon
by saying that tho picture of ou angel
exactly liko that which appears ou tho
Taylor portrait was on tho back of a
photograph near by. He bcliovcs that by
some electrical freak tho picture of tho
angel was photographed over tho |>or-
trait. Tho affair, however,'has caused
a great deal of comment, and people for
miles around como to seo tho picture.—

Vlnltlng tho Library.
A visit to tho partially completed Con
gressional library is quite amusing. Not
that there is much that is interesting in
the sha]>elc.«s tangle of brick and stone,
but it is tho instructions visitors get at
tho gato that aro amusing. When one
goes in at tho wide gato through tho
board fence on tho Last Capitol street
side ho is not apt to notico a little old
man that sits in a little house just inside
tho gate. If one doesn't notijje him the old
watchman will stop one with an impera
tive “Iley, thorol” One stops, .and in
the richest sort of an Irish brogue is
told: “Now. yea can go in and look
about as much as yez loike. But there
is some things yez mustn't do. Don't
talk to any of the men. Don't go or
of the walls, and don't go inside of the
building anywhere. An’ don’t yez«wk
any of the men questions. Moind that,
now, and yez oan see all yo plase."—-

Attorney Arthur 8. Fisher, of Rock

honors. IIo is a member of the Owl
club, a society of Ogle county bachelors,
and his doom was sealed at its picnic on

tion of officers. Among tho officers is
one called “the |d0.000 beauty of tho
club.” and he who is elected to this
office must marry within a year and
withdraw from tho society. The charm
has never failed to work ret, and every
man who has been elected to tho offleo
has been married within the year. Evary
other officer is elecf^l by acclamation,
hot this one is elected by solemn and
sacred ballot. When the ballots were
counted it was found that Mr. Fisher
was tho doomed man. Tho good Matured

Wcatlm Intellectual Impaltri.
Ono of tho rcsnlts of tho Chantanqna
assemblies, which bavo a tendency to
awnkon unnatural activity of the brain
and an abnormal thirst for knowledge,
was shown recently. Tho 4-year-old son
of ono of the officers of tho Long Pino
assembly horned his father’s barn in or
der to seo what sort of n bonfire it wotrid
mako. Ho also wished to seo whether a
sotting lien would preserve her presefwo
of mind when surrounded by flames, and
his observations will doubtless bo a val
uable contribution to science, although
the experiment was necessarily expen
sive to the parent of tho young Chau tan- ■
quan. The setting hen deserted her pros
pective family and saved her life, a fact
which proves that in the disposition of
the hen tho instinct of self preservation
overbalances maternal devotion. There
is no doubt Chautauqua assemblies have
givon a great intellectual impulse to tho
rising generation.—Omaha World-Her
