A Golden Orchid.
Among a great number of cypripodium
tosigno received at St. Albans and “es
tablished” Mr. Bonder noted one pres-
cntly of which the flower stalk was
yellow instead of brown, os is usual.
I Sharp eyes are a valuable item of the
orchid grower's stock in trade, for tbe
smalloet peculiarity among such “sport
ive” objects should not be neglected.
Carefully bo put the yellow stalk aside
—the only ono among thousands, one
might say myriads, since cypripediuro
insigno is one of our oldest and com
monest orchids, and it never showed this
phenomenon before. In dno course the
flower opened and proved to ho all golden.
Mr. Sander cat his plant in two, sold half
for £75 to a favored customer and the
other half publicly for 100 guineas.—

“Above all others, One If known
Who well deserve* the name of Friend;
Beyond a brother** lore Is shown
HI* lore, free, cosOy, without end."
But sweeter Car than all beside
Bound Lucy's gentle, sainted words;
Pitched soft and meek, her fruitful tone
Gives to my Ufs a nobler trend:
"Above all others, One U known
Who well deserves the name of Friend."
The people next us do not hear
The burden of that a till small voice;
And yet It bid* me plain and clear
To make this childlike soul my choice
And sudden yearning* rise Intense,
And fitly with her singing blend.
That, some day, in a human sen»e,
I may become—her more than friend.

it extends eastward to Fort Worth, Tex.,
eighteen states and territories were
visited and traversed. The contrasts
offered by it to the solitude of 1885
wore almost amazing. West of the
meridian named there are now at
least 23,000 miles of railroad, and of
telegraph wires not less than 150,-
000 miles. Of telephono and eloctrio
light cables, in proportion to population,
there are more miles to use than else
where within the United States. There
is today more property owned per capita
than anywhere else on the continent.
Two-fifths of the national domain is
found west of tho line givon, and cer
tainly three-fifths of the remaining pnbllo
lands of tho United States most be
sought for in the same region; and that,
too, without considering Alaska. Yet
how few persons are cognizant of the
foot that east and west the geograph
ical center of this Union is somewhere
in the Bay of San Francisco; for with
the Aloutian islanders flying onr flag
within fifty miles of the Siberian coon
of Asia, onr domain extends, on a north
western and southeastern lino, some
3,000 miles beyond the Golden Gate.—
