LOBSTER AND COD CULTURE.
A NSW Departure In the Propagation of
Iks Shelldsh.
It is very probable that unices we have
resort to artificial culture to replenish
our lobster fisheries there will be a
marked deoUne in Nova Beotia's output
during the next few years. Already
Newfoundland is ahead of ns is this
branoh of fish culture, for under the
manmmmt of Adolph Nlelaen, a Nor
wegian expert, “the andont colony" hae
taken anew departure in the propaga
tion of cod and lobsters. In a recent
article Rev. Moses Harvey writes that
the fish hatchery on the shore of Trinity
bay is tho largest in the world for the
ion of codfish and lobsters, and
of hatching 800,000,000 of ood
800,000,000 lobsters in a single sea-
sou.
A single mother lobster can Mow away
no lsss than 10,000 eggs, and sha carries
these about with her until they are ri
pened and hatched. The lobster trapper
takes these mother fish and carries them
to tho factory, where they are thrown
into boiling water, and of course the eggs
are destroyed. The quantity of lobster
ova that perish in this way is beyond
all calculation, and is one great cause of
dsnleted fisheries.
Mr. Harvey thus describes Mr. Niel
sen's ingenious methods: He gets ths fe
male lobster at the factories before they
are boiled, and with a sort of spoon oonr
atructed for the purpose he stripe the
eggs from the fibrils and returns the lob
ster uninjured. He takes the eggs,
which are not nearly so delicate as those
of toe cod, and places them in the inou-
baton, where the water is kept in con
stant motion.
After a tono, longer or shorter no-
cording to tho degreo of ripeness they
have reached before being removed from
the mother, these ova are hatched. With
some of them only two days are required;
in the case of other* lose advanced a
month or even two months may be
needed to hatch them. Unlike the cod
the young lobster must be fed, for it has
no yolk sao to feed on when it breaks
from toe ahelL Mussels chopped too,
with occasionally a few yolks of eggs,
furnish food on whloh they grow rapid
ly, and in five or six days they have gone
through their first shelling and are fit to
be sat free in the water to pick up their
TO living. '■
Mr. Nielsen has invented floating in
cubators to be plaoed in the water near
the lobster factories which are scattered
around the shores. In these incubators
the eggs are placed and attended to by
men properly instructed. He bas 488 of
these floating incubator* distributed this
year at thirteen different stations—
thirty-six at each. They are reported to
be working admirably. Thera would be
no serious difficulty involved in making
similar experiments upon our own coast,
and we understand that toe energetic

r. S. Judges and Railway Pro partita.
Thla effort to obtain a receivership,
which means toe temporary control of
toe whole railway, generally result* In a
violent struggle between different inter
ests, either to secure or maintain the
management through to* receivership.
The determination of whether a receiver
ship is to be had, and of the penon or
sreons to be such receivers, lies in toe
ends of • single jafige, This chut of
lsss gives to toe circuit judges at toe
United States, by transferring to them
the management and operation of vast
railway properties, a degree of responsi
bility and patronage never originally in
tended to be placed in their power.
The opportunitiee tons presented to a
court of jnstloe for the exercise of pat
ronage, the reward of friends, the seleo-
tlon of oounsel for receivers, the ap
pointment of masters, and the manipu
lation and adjustment of large pecuniary
interests, are. in toemaelvea very much
to be deprecated. While no scandals of
any magnitude have as yet arisen from
this power of appointment and the pat
ronage and pecuniary expenditure inci
dent thereto, it is, after all said and
done, a modern, and indood a much more
formidable, form of judicial property
administration than that which corrupt
ed tho court of chancery in England in
the exercise of its jurisdiction over the
estate* of wards in chancery.
