that are being worn and displayed in
the stores. Everybody has some kind
of fur, either in a long circular cape
made of sealskin with shoulders at least
five inches high and a collar that reaches
ELEGANT WINTER WRAPS,
np to the ears, and the whole lined with
squirrel skin, or a jacket, an ulster or a
wrap; and all kinds of fur are used.
Jackets of sealskin are trimmed with
bands of leopard Bkin, and shoulder
capes are made of leopard, bear, tiger
and wildcat or lynx. In fact, the only
fur unrepresented it seems to mo is that
of tho opossum and pig. Dog there is,
and cat I am sure, so that it is compara
tively easy to bo in fashion as far as fur
goes.
Very pretty novelties in trimming aro
made by applique in kid, leather or vel
vet outlined in beads or gilt braid. Tho
skirt to l>e trimmed should have tho
front breadth quite plain and wider
than usual, and tho applique can be pat
on in perpendicular figures or a hori
zontal band which reaches around to
the back breadths. The loathcr makes a
rather stiff trimming, which is suitable
for serge and cloth, whilo kid is more
suitable for soft vicunas and tricots,
and velvet can bo used on anything
with equal propriety and effect. Tho
pattern should be stamped on tho mate
rial and bo applied and basted to tho
goods, after which that portion to bo
cut away is removed with a sharp pair
of scissors. Tho edge can ho turned in
and hemmed down, or laid flat and but-
tonholed on, which is tho best way.
Only a little should be cut out at a time.
Satin is now being displayed as tho
“high novelty" in very thick and excel
lent quality, black being thor favorite,
made np with some combination of
color. A magnificent gown of this kind
was recently imported for a lady of my
acquaintance. The dress was cut prin-
cessc, en traine, and had waist drapery
and sash made of gold colored satin. The
front breadth was of gold color and
black brocade. Tho sleeves wero mads
with slashes of gold and black satin, and
the whole gown was most superb,
thongh comparatively simple.
I noticed recently a great quantity of
striped petticoats in colored wool, which
aro tho revival of the old Dalmoral
skirts over which our mothers osed to
loop their dresses in festoons. They are
in sizes for women and tiny little girls.
BEAUTIFUL DINNER TOILET,
and I suppose we will have to wear them
next spring, possibly this winter. The
stripes go around the bottom and are of
graduated width, and I think them any
thing bat pretty. They are sewed on deep
•yokes at the top, trhich would indicate
that the sheath shaped gowns aro in to
stay ;-for these things somehow all have
• relation to each other.
Serge du nord is a new goods which
has bordering* of tufted material ind-
line braiding are added.
