Marlon' Maoon, Dooly and: Wttflpv t Entered at Amerloua roat-Offlce as second e aas matter. All communications should be addressed to AMERICUS PUBLISHING CO. Incorporated 1890. AMERICUS, GA Senator Gordon won in Georgia Senator Pugh was re-elected in Alabama, and Senator Hampton may win in South Carolina. The old fellow, are hard to down. The bill which was lately Intro duced In the legialature to have the member, of the of the railroad com mission elected by popular vote meet, with considerable favor in both hoUBea, Editor Brown, of the Farmer’s Alliance, Is being fired at by all the newspapers from all parts of the State, Many alliancemen are bit tefly opposed to him and bis paper, and he may have a hard row to hoe the coming year. THE MESSAGE, President Harrison's message to Congress yesterday was unusually long and tiresome, though it re ferred to very few of the important matters now before the people. He say. that after the people better understand tbe McKinley bill they will appreciate It. He again advocates tbe force bill, al leging that gross outrages are be ing committed in tbe Southern States. His message is devoted mainly to a defense of bis admlnstration, and explaining where tbe surplus has gone—a task it requires sever al uolumuK to do. The whole message is labored and without anything bright to re deem it. Not a single idea (or the benefit of the people is advanced. It is written on the line that the Republican party svaed the Union and 1h now deserving of peace aud power because It favois liberal pensions. - As a campaign and votemaklng document for tho Democrats tne message Is a succe-s. - THE MASS MEETING. A full report of tbe mass meeting will bo found In our local columns. Tub Recorder believes tbe meet ing will be productive of good. Unfortunately, t ie attendance was not large enough to Justify any action towards arranging for a pri mary, and In consequence another meeting was arranged for Wedues day night. The Recorder 1s in favor of a Democratic primary, but it be- 1 levee in allowing the fullest liberty for the expression of the voice of thgjiepple. For the meeting yes terday to have gone ahead and arranged for a primary would have been to disorganize and cause trouble In the party, as the number In attendance was not large enough to justify such a course. As The Recorder pointed out Sunday morning, all Interests In ttje party muss be consulted'before a movement is made, and it it is found that a majority of the Dem ocratic voters do not favor a pri mary it would be best to drop the matter. If a meeting that Is not fully representative should take definite actlou, (t would court de feat, and at this day In the history of Amerlcus we cannot afford po litical disruptions among the Dem ocrats—for we are all Democrats. If the meeting to-moflrow night istnlly representative, and favors a primary, then we should have one, and tbe voters should be given the fullest latitude as to selecting the executive committee wblob will order and arrange for It. Ev erything should be clearly done that there can be no charges of col lusion or pre-arrangement. And In this we believe Thk Re corder voices a majority of the Democratic voters of Amerlcus. 409 JACKSON STREET .... 1 hnve but recently returned from Net* York, where I purcbiued the large.! and lno«t complete .tonkin our line ever brought to Amerlcui.
