Whether you want a primary or
not, attend the mass meeting at the
opera house to-night.
How to make a thriving, bustling,
industrious city: A long pull, and
a pull altogether; and in them, an
time, support your home paper.
It is the doty of every voter to
eeo that none but good men are
eleoted to manage the affairs of a
city. It is your duty, therefore, to
attend the mass meeting to-night.
One man in the legislature lias
been found who has courage. It is
Mr. Graves, of Newton, and he lias
introduced a dog law. The law is
simply to the effect that each dog
must wear a tag, which will cost
$1, and his owner must be responsi
ble for any damages ho may do.
The Rome Tribune announces
that after the fifth of this month
that paper will he in tho charge of
Messrs. Branham, of the Brunswlok
Times, and Frost, also of Bruns
wick. These gentlemen &ill again
bring the Tribune to tho front, and
make a first-class paper of It.
It is very easy to start a paper;
but to run it and make it pay is an
other matter. Take the Borne Tri
bune for example. It began with
a big etock company to back it, and
for a time was one of the best pa
pers in the State, but the expenses
were so heavy that it gradually
went down. Now it has changed
hands and experienced men are put
in charge, but it will be many
months before the thousands of
dollars are regained that it has cost
the projectors.
WE ARE AS STRANGERS.
In another column The Record
er publishes extraots from a pri
vate letter from a gentleman In the
North. He has been reading of the
Sonth through The Recorder for
several years, and has become very
much interested in it, though be
has never visited it. One portion
of his letter will give our peoplo an
idea of the difficulty of Inducing
immigration to the 8outh-*-that Is,
the little knowledge people of the
North possess regarding the South
and its people.
To thousands of them the South
is an unknown land. Of -every
other portion of the United States
they are posted, but of the South
they know absolutely nothing. It
Is this want of knowltdge which
the Republican stump speakers
shrewdly take advantage of when
political campaigns are had. The
people are told that the South Is
filled with out throats, who go
around terrorising the poor negro,
and compel him so keep away from
/the polleon election days—and It Is
all believed.
Not until some arraugement Is
made with the railroads whereby
oheap excursions can be run from
•very point in the North to the
South will the great masses hud
out what the South really is. At
it la, not a railroad north of the
Ohio river will take any interest In
an excursion to the South unless
they are guaranteed the tale of
a certain number of tickets at a
high rate. Yet these same roads
will give cheap excursion rates to
- the far West for almost nothing.
Very few Southern roods own
any land, and as a consequence are
not directly interested in getting
up oheap excursions. 'All roads in
the W««t own immense bodies of
land, and it is to sell this that such
low rates are offered on excursions.
There to * certain fascination in
riding on a train that draws us all,
and many go on these excursions
solely tor the ride. They visit the
iplrfiwUtigl intention of locating,
hot its advantages are pressed upon
them; they listen, and tbejr move.
Had the South the same opportu-
