IT IS A PRIMARY.
WILL BE HELD FOR CITY OFFI
CERS.
So Bay ttao Citizens fin Mass Meeting
Azsomblcd—A Harmonious Oatbering
Last Night—The Executive Commit-
tee Appointed.
Pursuant to adjournment Mon
day last, the cltizeue gathered in
mass meeting last night at the opera
house.
A harmonious meeting it was.
And a primary will be held to
nominate city oflicers for the ensu
ing term.
A little after seven (Chairman J.
C. Mathews ascended the stage,
and called the meeting to order.
He stated that it was merely a con
tinuation of the meeting Monday,
and he presumed all knew tbe ob
ject. He was ready to entertain
any motion.
Mr. M. B. Council arose, saying
tie had uothiug against any mau,
but was for harmony alone, and
therefore offered the following res
olution:
“Tlio Democratic voters of the city of
Americas in mnss meeting Assembled, rec
ognizing a nocosflty lor primary elections
lor city onicer, by the great party to which
we belong, resolve that wo declare as tho
sentiments of this meeting that tn all else
tlons forolty officers a Democratic primary
should bitfield.”
These were adopted unanimously
without discussion.
Mr. L. J. Blalock stated that as
it was carried that the sense of the
Democratic party favored prlma
ties, he offered theje resolutions
“Whereas, this meeting of Democrats in
mass mooting assembled are In favor of
primary elections for city officers In the
city of Americas, therefore be It
Rcsolvod, Tbatthe executive commit
tee of the Democratic party bo seleotod to
serve for the full term of two years, or un
til their successors be appointed, to-wlt
Ono from each of the four wards ot the
elty, and one from the city at large, to be
selected by tbls mooting.
"Rcsolvod, further, that the duty of said
commltteo shall be to take cognizance and
control of tbe Demoerattz primaries of
Amerlcus and order a primary at the en
•ulng election, and arrange detallz for the
came.”
At thli point Mayor Felder arose
and said he was glad to seo such
representative orowd out, and was
willing to do anything they said.
But since he had worked for the
Democratic party for 25 years he
thought this gave him the privilege
of talking to them awhile. He bad
always voted the Democratic ticket
savy once; that was while in the
army, when he voted for the dla
tlnguiahed and dearly beloved oltl-
zen ‘whom they consigned to the
earth that .afternoon. He thought
the action of calling a primary pre
mature. There had never bsen ■
republican candidate for olty offi
cers. The fight, no, hardly fight,
was among tbe party. There had
been no party lines drawn, hereto
fore, and it seemed to him as If tbls
was inviting, and making a separa
tion in a family. If there waa an
emergency on us, he would favor
the movement, or it the meeting
adopted it he was with them, right
or wrong. They should not awaken
a sleeping man, and urge him to
fight. Don’t draw tbe line now.
He wanted them In the last place,
to dlatlnotly understand that he
was a Democrat, heart and soil],
and whatever was the action of the
meeting his name was In the pot,
whether it brought feast or famine.
Col, Slmmona arose and began
dlaeuselng the Drat resolution, bat
was called to order by tbe chair,
he rating- that] this was already
carried.
The previona question was then
called, the resolution* being, first
re-read, and was carried with one
dissenting voice.
Col. E. F. Hinton moved that a
committee of ten be appointed by
tbe chair, to retire and select names
for the executive committee as
mentioned iu the resolutions, these
names to be presented >to the meet
ing and acted upon. Carried
Unanimously.
It was then moved to reconsider
action on resolutions, but after dis
cussion the motion wa- withdrawn.
The tollowing committee was
then appointed by the chair: E.
F. Hinton, J. A. Ansley, G. VV.
Glover, A. T. Oliver, H. C. Bagley,
B. H. Jossey, L. J. Blalock, J. it.
Chaw, J. M. It. Westbrook and Al
bert Wluter.
This committee retired and after
a few minutes returned, reporting
the following names for the execu
tive committee of the city for the
noxt'two years: 1st ward, W. J
Harper; 2nd ward, C. M. Wheat
ley; 3rd ward,]C. H. B. Horne; 4tb
ward, John Windsor; city at large,
J. A. Davenport.
The meeting adopted the report
unanimously, accepting the nomi
nations.
Dr.-HInkle moved that proceed
ings of meeting be published in the
city papers, which being carried,
meeting adjourned.
FOR MAYOR.
The friends of Hon. John B. f elder are
authorized to announce blm as a candl
date for the office of Mayor, subject to the
