A SERIOUS LOSS.

SUPERIOR COURT ADJOURNS TILL
MONDAY

Wat Done Yeiterday.
Wednesday night or Thursday
morning Mr. J. W. Castleberry
who lives sevu* miles east of
Americus, lu the 28th district, was
awakened by the crackling |of (ire
and discovered Ills house burning
down. He first got his wife out,
who has a litllo babe of only ten
days, and then turned his nttoiition
to save what lie could front the
flames. He called a couple of ne
groes, who live on the plnce, and
with their assistance succeeded In
saving two beds, a bureau and an
organ. He made several efforts to
enter tho house again, but could
not.
The bouse was a neat five-room
country residence, built last year.
Besides losing all of his furniture,
his smoke .house and all of his
provisions were swept away.
The loss is estimated at twelve
kuudred dollars, with no insur
ance,
Mr. Castleberry is a poor man,
and the loss of his residence, fur
niture, smoke house, etc., Is a sad
blow to him. He is a bard work
ing man with twelve small chil
dren to provide for.
The origin of the fire is un
known, but is believed to be the
work of an incendiary.
A petititiod was circulated for
his and family’s benefit yesterday.
Let all help who can.

“Si I'erkius, of Fughtowu,” was
at the Opera House last evening
with his excellent company, and as
mirth provokers they are simply
immense, and from the rise of the
curtain in the first act until its
drop in the last, there was one con
tinued round of applause. . The
dauce of the deacons, the district
school scene, the great country fair
and all following each otfier iu
rapid succession, made an eve
ning’s enjoyment that would drive
away the blues from au ludlgo fac
tory. The music is fine and of the
most “catchy” nature. The sougs
are excellent and the topical pro
duction, "Nobody Knows,” brought
the house down lu a storm. If “Si
Perkins” should ever come back to
Sherman, we predict that the
house will not be sufficiently large
to hold thy crowd.
Bather Piggish.
Americus boasts the prize pig-
foot eater; at least his record is
the best yet in. Wednesday night
H. M. Buckner tackled Mr. J. T.
Alexander for treat of something to
eat, uud made away with three
pig’s feet in a few seconds. On
surprise being expressed as' lo the
rapidity with which they disap
peared, he declared that he could
eat as many as a dozen in 15 min
utes. Mr. Alexander offered to pay
for them if he did, If Buokuer
would pay for them ifne failed.
The conditions were accepted and
the raco began. As fast as Mr.
Scarborough, from whom they weT*
bought, could sboVel them out,
Buckner ground off the meat and
pitched the bones in a box. In ten
minutes 25 had disappeared, and
still he showd no disposition to
stop. His appetite seemed insati
able, nnd the last was eaten In just
14 minutes with as much sesmlng
Superior court adjourned yester
day until next Monday.
