The third party idea will not
work in the South. The Alliance
will be contented to do its reform
work inside the Democratic party.
Newspaper changes are now be
ing made, in order to start with the
new year. Mr. C. B. Chapman
is the latest, who goes from the
LaGrango Graphic to the Sanders
vllle Progress.
The present legislature, at least
those members who are alliance-
men, do not like newspaper critl
oism. They ate probably finding
out that there is considerable work
about the duties of a legislator,
wheu he does his duty.
The Democrats in Congress, in
both Senate and house, have hard
work laid out for them. Besides
the force bill there are many large
appropriation bills, and a new ap'
portlonmeut bill must be passed.
As the Republicans have a major!
ty, it keeps the Democrats on the
alert. The next Congress will
change all this.

The Cordele Cordelvan publishes
the following:
“South Georgia very rarely gets
one of the big offices. Atlanta al
ways holds a man ready for every
thing. It is true the farmurs put
in a governor this year, but tbey
could not get a United States sena
tor away from Atlanta, and draw
ing tbe line at Macon, it has been
fifty years since a United Stales
Senator has bocu elected or appoint
ed from the Southern pin of the
State. Judge Willis A. Hawkins
for a short time was appointed
Judge of tbe Supreme Court, but
be was not re-elected, and noSoutb
Georgia tuan lias ever been eieoted
for any of the big offices tn the last
thirty years,
“We would llko very much if
this rule could be broken in the
case of tbe uex^ railroad commis
sioner for the state of Georgia,
Judge Alien Fort is on, of the
ablest judges In tbe state of Geor
gia. He is s fine lawyer, fully in
sympathy with the people, with a
mind capable of grarplng the great
questions of railroad transportation
and with sufficient legal acumen
and executive ability to catry Into
efleot the decisions prompted by
his good judgment.
“The transportation of lumber
and naval stores is a great question.
Each day at Cordele we see over a
huured cart of lumber pass and
re-pass. Numbers and numbers of
cars of naval stores also passing
and re-passing every .day. These
two articles make rnorfe tonage for
the railroads than everything else
combined, and it does seem that we
ought to have* man posted on the
needs of the manufacturers of these
two articles of merchandise for our
next commissioner. Judge Allen
Fort Is a man whom the naval
■toresmen and lumber men had
rather see appointed to the post
tlon tiian any one else.
■ “They are anxious to have him
appointed. They believe that in
him tbey would have a representa
tive familiar with their needs, and
while willing to do justice to tbe
railroads, is in sympathy With the
shippers In their efforts to secure
quick transportation and equitable
and jnst rates for theso two arti
cles, the transportation of which
enters so largely Into the question*
to be passed apou by the railroad
commissioners. A man not fa
miliar with the needs end require
ments l of our people throughout
this section of the country cannot
■o ably represent them as one like
Judge Allen Fort, who has lived
here all his days.
‘‘Gdv. Northen could not do a
better thing then to appoint this
distinguished jurist who la so fa
miliar xith the great need* of our
aeefjwjtp |l>ls Important, position.
We sincerely trust that Hon. Alien
Fort of the county of Sumter will
be appointed to'fitl the position of
railroad commissioner for the state
made.”
