they have greater cause for re*

The merchants closed their

It being necessary to satisfy n

BETSY HAMILTON.
According to announcement in
my letter of last week, “Betsy
Hamilton,” Mrs. I. M. Plowman,
gave an entertahimeut at the opera
house last Friday night. As soon
as It was known that she was in
the city, the people flocked to D-ivis
Lock’s, and the reserved seats
were all sold long before night at
cents each. At 8 o’clock the
opera bouse was packed, nud when
thecurtaiu rose Betsy's counten
ance brightened up like the moon
slipping from behind a cloud, as
she beheld the large, intelligent
and cheering audience. She was
Introduced by Col. J. M. Griggs,
and for nearly three hours she
charmed the audience with her
“character sketches,” imitating to
perfection, in gesture aud speech,
the high and the low, the old and
tile young, the mule and female,
the learned and the unlearned, the
white ami the bluck.
The sketch In which she repre
sented “old Miss Fresliours,” in
her old checked, homespun dress,
bend rug and specs, talking to her
self, dipping snuff, smoking her
cob pipe, carding rolls and spinning
them on an old-fashioned wheel,
singiug “Old Lang Slue” on an ex
tremely high key ns she walked
backwards and forwards making
tlie obi wheel hum like a roaring
lion, notwithstanding the “misery
111 her side” was extremely amus
ing and elicited rounds of applause.
These sketches were Interspersed
with excellent Instrumental aud
vocal music by Mrs. E. It. Griggs,
Misses Lots Clark, Alice Glaze
Jennie I’earee, and Messrs. Warren
Bigelow, Ed Uurr, Tom Sale nud
Don Martin. The Baptist church
received a benefit of a little over
#100 from the net proceeds of the
entertainment.
Miss Maud Atkinson played in
Dawson three nights last week
She is quite a favorite In our city,
EL11EK M’OEHEE.
Presiding Elder E. H. McGehee
preached two able sermons at the
Methodist church last Sunday, and
nU Monday morning held the lust
quarterly conference fur this year.
The report from the pastor on the
State of the church, Sunday school,
etc., were very interesting and en
couraging.
The assessment for our pastor %n3
presiding elder has been fully paid
up, and our beloved pastor Itev. E.
M. Whtltug, has been presented
by his congregation with a $40 suit
of clothes, and I think I may safely
predict that he will be returned to
us next year by the general confer
ence which will meet In Macon on
he 17th tnst.
or that the world Is coming to an
end. He says be is saving bis

Mr. Frank Barge, of Web.ter
county, Is In the city, and gave me
a surprise this morning by criming
in, taking hold of me aud giving
me a regular Cotton compress
squeeze for what, I said in The
Recorder about Gen. Gordon. If
Gordon has a better friend in this
section than Captain Kaigler or
myself, ills name is Frank Barge.
Last Monday Mr. J. E Waller
county surveyor, surveyed the
west half of the court house square,
dividing it into ten business lots,
30 by 144 feet, fronting on Main
street. These lots are beautifully
located and are very desirable.
They will he sold at public auction
on the first Tuesday In Januaiy
next.

Pills Won’t Cure Dyspepsia.
Dyspepsia, are ever hopeless.
They seek relief from their distress
of stomach aud liver, and Audit
not. Indigestion, heartburn, verti
go, extreme lassitude, loss of ener-
gy, peevishness, etc., is the bane of
their existence and inors the com
placent feelings of others around
the family fireside. Why won't
dyspepslcs come and be cured. It
can be done. There is one sure
way of strengthening the digestive
organs and removing every syinj
tom of general debility caused
thereby. But this caunot be done
by the taking of pills and other
cathartic mixtures. Much treat
ment while seeming to give tempo
rary relief at first, In the end ag
gravates the disease and increases
the suffering, for it is like whip
ping a tired horse, it irritates and
urges, but the strength to move at
last gives out entirely. Thousands
of former dyspeptics are now happy
in health and strength of stomach
brought about by the use of the fin
est of strengthening and healing
tonic ulterativeskuown as Dr. John
Bull’s Karsapar'.lla, the eondeused
virtue of many excellent herbs. It
is the biggest and tlie best Sarsapa
rilla sold.
