When they ehoold make them serve then. The press Is also partly re* sponsible for this condition of things, for If any class of people qn earth know the rottenness of poll* ties editors and reporters sorely do. And yet the politicians are blindly served and obeyed. When tbeavakenlogcomes there wlU be socb a tearing down and pruning out as will surprise the red-neoed ward heeler pr country politician. Judge Crisp’s election as Speaker of the next House becomes more and more possible as tbe days roll i>y- Tbo Ocala convention has fully adopted the sub-treasury bill, and it promises to play an Important part In politics. The betterments question has fairly got under way In the leg. islature, and before tbe legislature adjourns it sbould provide some way to settle It. At twenty cents a pound turkeys would seem to be a better paying crop than cotton at ten, besides being more convenient about Christmaa time. What a Merry Christmas Amerl eus will have, to be sure. The At lanta Journal’s remark that Amor ims’ people should be called “merry oussos” will literally be true about that time. Americas can afford to jollify on Christmas week. If any other town of its size in Georgiacan show a record of 600 new houses and doz ens of buildings and new Indus tries, we don’t know where It Is. If there ever was a monopoly the Insurance pool in this wtnto Is one, and probably the worst. The present legislature Is making arrangements to lay It out In tbe cold. THE STATE ROAD. There may be trouble about ibis road again, or at least, in article In yesterday’s Constitution would lead one to suppose&b much. The article Infers that Governor Brown may take measures to pre vent the State from turning over the road to the new lessees on Deo, 27th, and In that cate the new les sees would refuse to take charge of the road. This all seems to The Recorder like quibbling over small matter, and also infers that the State will be passive under suoh treatment. How Governor (or ox-Gov. Brown oan prevent tbe road being turned over to the new lessees on the date named we cannot see, nor do we believe there will be any trouble to amount to anything. The people are willing to pay a reasonable price for betterments, but they will not bo forced into It. A CRISIS. The Constitution sounds a note of warning to the money bags of the country, and tells In plain lan guage that the people are becotn lug very tljed of a dozen men con trolling the destinies of tho eoun try, and sending things to ruck and ruin at their sweet pleasure. Anti the Constitution Is right. The time Is near at hand when tue peo ple propose to have a voice In the oontrol of this government, and if they cannot get It through one of the great political parties they will get It by other means. The system of government that allow* one man to make $30,000,000 In a lew days Is rotten somewhere, and the somewhere must be in Its financial law*. Then the people are taxed too muoh. Where all the many millions which are wrung from the masses go to no one can tell. Congress pa/s too muoh at tention to political matter*, and too little to tbe needs qf the people whom they profess to serve. The people themselves are great ly to blame for this condition of things. They worship officeholders When! I have bat recently returned from Near York, where I purchased the largest and most complete stock^lii our line ever brought to Amcricu*.
