The South’. Industrial Progress.
The Manufacturers' Itecord of
this week coutiuues to show the
wonderful advancemeLt of the.
South, notwithstanding the money
stringency which teini'orarily re
tards all new enterprises, and the
approach of the season when busi
ness men are generally more in
tent upon closing up the year's
work tliau in entering upon new
engagements, the Industrial devel
opmeut of the Soutu shows contin
ued activity. There is, in fact, but
little indication of any halting in
the maruli of progress, except here
and there projected enterprises
may be temporarily delayed by the
tightness of th$ money matters in
the North ; but the prospects 1 re
very favorable for an easy money
market InJanuaiy, and then we
may reasonably look for a very
marked increase In the move of
capital HOtitli. During the past
week many important enterprises
—land improvement companies,
town building companies and man
ufacturing concerns—have been or
ganized.
Among the most important one*
reported for the week are tire fol
lowing: At Norfolk, a $1,000,000
land company to develop about TOO
acres of property, which has al
ready arranged for a $300,000 cotton
mill; at Shenandoah Junction, W.
Va., the orossing point of the Balti
more aud Ohio aud.theShenandoah
Valley railroads, a now town is to
be built by $1,000,000 company,
which lias already arranged for the
location there of live or six large
industrial enterprises to employ
several thousand hands; at Charles
ton, W. Va*., a $2,500,000 company
has been organized to build salt
aud soda ash works; Bldgedale,
Teiin., is to have car works;
Lawreuceburg, Tenu., a $25,000
furniture factory; Bock Hlli, S. C.,
$20,000 foundry and machine
shop; Danville, Va., $150,000 ma
chinery company; Columbia, S. C.,
$40,000 manufacturing company;
Coviugtou, Va., a 125-toii furnace;
Kentucky, a $100,000 coal mlulug
company; Norfolk, Va., $00,000
brick works; Staunton, Va., large
wagou works; Waco, Texas, a $1,-
000,000 laud company; Murfrees
boro, Teuu., $20,000 water works;
Beldsvllle, N. C., a fertilizer facto
ry; Sherman, Texas, $200,000 bag
manufacturing company; San An
gelo, Texas, $52,000 water works
improvements; Falrland, Texas,
$25,000 water works; Kentucky, a
$25,000 hardwood lumber company;
Wytheville, Va., $250,000 wagon
works company, and at other places
many other enterprises covering a
wide range of industries. As a
brief summary of some of the lead
ing enterprises reported for one
week, the foregoing facts show that
the South is steadily pressing for
ward in the great work of develop
ing its natural resources.

But Borrowed It From tbs ladle. Who
Had Balled It—A ‘ Church festival
War in Leesburg.
Leesburg,Deo, II.—Oh! Woman
thou art a Jewel I That’s what they
say about ua, Mr. Editor, but -ead
on a little further. Here we have
a Baptist church vhlclr any In
land town might with safety be
proud of. A new Baptist eburoh,
which of course Is not yet complete,
having no furniture, carpets, eto.
Well, some time last spring there
was-acominlttee of ladies appointed
to raise funds to furnish said
church with lights, carpets, and
other Wincessary furniture. They
exu»"*ted ail their efforts In the
promotion of said cause, without
sufficient success; they made their
rounde with necessary petitions,
every one they called on reipond-
Ing liberally, but not enough so to
meet the demand; they then pro
jected a festival, which was as near
a complete success as they could
reasonably expect, realizing some
forty odd dollars, a sufficiency,
however, to obtain the lights with
about tweuty-tbree or four dollars
over, which they very wisely have
in safe deposit. This not, being suf
ficient to fit up the church as they
thought proper, they yleclded that
their mission was not complete aud
a few days ago set about framing or
projecting another festival, wbicb
your correspondent advertised.
Well, now to the point.
The church last Saturday Id con-
fereure decided limt it was not
right or legitimate to use money
raised in this way for church pur
poses. Oh, my! There they tore
up the play house aud spilt the
candy all in their grit, aud the next
day in a what they call a call con
ference they propose to borrow the
residue of money from the com
mittee of ladles to finish paying for
the church, this being u fund raised
by said committee by (a festival
they give last spring. Oh, consis
tency .'
We love our church, every mem
ber of it. If wo kuow our hearts
we lovo them as brothers and sis
ters, and cau say with a good open
conscience that if they never com
mit a greater sin than aid in a
church festival, siichaoue as the
one there was in contemplation,
their eternal salvation Is a certain
ty. True our liberties in church
are limited. We are not allowed
freedom of speech nor a voice In
conference, etc., but yet they want
us to be preseut and hear aud see
what Is going on silently. It its
digestible, all right, if not, all
right, we must set there as mum
wallflowers.”
But when (hey want a little work
done, money raised, etc., they very
naturally resort to us, and a com
mittee is arrauged—buk under cer
tain stipulations. I do* hope what
say here to the public will not bo
found wanting In good natured sa
tire, or misconstrued in any way,
but In the course of debate,Monday,
one brother, a good man too, every
body known, that referred or eald
he would about as Boon get up a
raffle to raise eburch funds as a fes
tival. Well, some of our good Bis
ter Methodsts, last winter, had a
cake cutting, or rallied oft a cake.
I)otf t know that the good brother
bad any reference to that or not, ao
we beg leave to difTer with blur,
and frankly say that we don’t tol
erate raflllng for anything or in the
interest of any cause, and that
there la a marked difference in the
two, and say also if there Is any
evil attached to a nicely conducted
churoh festival, that we are to
prone to sin that we can’t see it,
and would gladly be enlightened,
and hope that parties InleriKsd
will excuse us, as we only beg leave
todlflbr with some of our good
brothers, and let us all ever pray
for light and knowledge on the
particular subject of this great
‘‘bug bear," eburch-featlvala.

church, with the very best interest
