Wade Hampton Is defeated for Senator—but then Hampton didn’t have any Augusta Chronicle or Macon Telegraph to back him up, like Gordon did. It la hard on the saloon keeperi these frequent elections, and the cold weather makes it rough on the man who loves to take something to "keep him warm." The great question In the West is whether Ingalls can be defeated for Senator. If the opposition will only be firm, there Is no 'danger of this South-hater being returned to the Senate. In another year Americus’ line winter resort hotel will be filled with Northern sojourners, and they will make Americus more lively than ever. Several hundred Northern visitors make a big differ ence In any city. The Macon Telegraph Insinuates that a railroad commission would be a rare sight to people iu this part of the country. It might also safe ly say this country would be a rarer sight to a railroad commissioner. North Georgia people believe the "stepping off place" Is about twen ty miles South of Atlanta. And now the young men of Americus want a driving park. Let them have it. It will tend to encourage them, and In the end will result lu a county fair. What If it does start otr on a small scale, It will soon grow larger, and South west Georgia needs suck amuse- -ments, and should not depend upon other portions of the State for them. Will be presented by the manage ment of T. K. Bark’s New Trans- Atlantic Railroad Show to the couple who will be united in the holy bonds of matrimony at the af ternoon performance of the above show, on the day of the circus. This Is a bona-fide offer, made In good faith by the proprietor. Show grounds corner of Furlow and Bar- low streets. Admission 10 and 20 cents. During the campaign which elected the present general assem bly'll understood, and in some cas es the campaign was made on the Issue of betterments. And yet the legislature seems to be afraid -to tonch the question. That there Is a claim for better ments by the old lessees of the 'state road, and that considerable of that claim is just and can be oolleoted is not disputed, but so far the legislature will not appoint a committee to consider the matter, and will not consent to a commis sion being appointed to consider it. The position of the legislature is Ir regular and Inconsistent. If it be- Haves the claim to be unjust, why not say so and settle it? If partly just, then find how much the state should pay for betterments. Aa the matter now standi, and, It seems, will continue to stand, the legislators refuses to have anything to. do with the matter. This is very embarrassing to Gov. N jrtheu, not to mention the old and,Lvw lessees. Nearly forty days of .the present session has elapsed, and-not a thing ~ dead Istwte the - meat important question that the legislature will have to deal with. ft begins to look as though the legislature wanted to leave the bet terments question until the sum mer session, whan they will here ample tlma at thlelr disposal. Th» RicoxDJf* believes the claim should be examined, and ffiRjbfk is just should be paid, and thus settle the matter at once and I hereby announce myrelf a candidate during the ensuing terra of two yeurx, for the office of Tax Collector or Sumter conn ty, subject to the ratification ot the Demo cratic prBnary, soon to be held. If elected, my principal nnsiNtant will he Mr, Jimmie Furlow, now a minor. My candidacy is In the Interest of Uls father's family.
