LEE COUNTY NEWS.
The Political Night-School, Mattere-
Ncwipapor Votes-.Personal Mention.
Leesburo, Deo. 17.—Our elty is
unusually quite for the season.
The political tbeme Is the only one
that is being freely discussed, end
everything bids fair for a lively
race. We hear of a fresh candl
date every day or two, and by tb.e
time the election comes off we will
have a team that will be hard to
binder. But still some of them
will be hindered, or at least left.
Wish that we could support them
all, but it takes our very best to
support ourselves.
Several of our eitlzens contem
plate obanglng residences soon,
Hope though that none of them
will leave the oity. They are all
good ones, and we would like to
keep tbem.
Mrs..Leila Burkhalter, of Amer-
lous, In company with Mrs. Lizzie
Hooks, of Redbone, visited at the
Green House here last week.
CapL J. W. Forrester visited bis
home here Saturday and Sunday.
George Kimbrough, of the Amer-
lcus Times, was Id the oity a day
or two ago last week, shaking
bands wlt.i old friends and work
ing up bis paper. George Is a Lee
county boy, and we ail wish to see
him do well.
Rev. G. S. Johnson preached a
very Instructive sermon at the
Methodist church In this place last
Sunday, which In all probability
will be his last, he being subject to
order of Conference, which is now
In session In Macon, Ga. We
would so much like to have Dr.
Johnson with us another year.
Think that he has done us a great
deal of good, spiritually, and there
are muoh more that could be done.
Col. George Clarke, of the Lee
County New*, was In the city yes
terday, and put In Some good work
for his paper. If the citizens of
our county would take more inter
eat In their home paper, with this
young man at the helm, it would
soon rank among the fl rat-class pa
pers of the South.
The fall term of our school closes
with a grand old-time exhibition
next Friday night. The Board of
Education has scoured the services
of Prof. J. R. Cain for another year,
and we expect a flourishing school,
he being so well Identified here.
Can’t say as to whom his assistant
will be yet, the present Incumbent
having given satisfaction, we sup
pose she will be retained, or at least
get the refusal of the position.
The building of a new academy
Is now being talked of pretty freely.
Hope that the wind work will soon
give way to the saw and hammer.

Beaton.
No atreat oar*.
And for £0 days yon will have to

It’s tough, but can’t be helped.
Thte conclusion was reaobed at
the joint meeting of the street rail,
road and electrlo light company
last night.
Many present were In favor of
waiting till after the Christmas
holidays, If snob a step bad to be
taken. During the next week or
two the travel will be muoh
greater, Shd tbe* discontinuance
much more Inconvenient.
But it waa decided that this could
not be done, and the edict has gone
forth.
There will be no cars to-dsy.
And tbe last one for thirty days
has made its trip.
It will be very inconvenient for
our citizens, but there seems to
have been no help for tbe step.
The cause assigned is a scarcity
of fuel. Hardly enough ;ooal Is In
eight to keep the lights going for
tbe next thirty days, and wood la
just as soarce.
While off, tbe cars will be reno
vated, and put in first-class condi
tlon.
Here are tbe official proceedings
of tbe meetlDg last night, signed
by tbe Presidents of tbe two com-
panics:
“Tbe Board of Directors of the

Railroad Company, In joint meet
ing assembled, decided that tbe
scarcity of coal makes it necessa

“The present supply and future

ANNUAL CONFERENCE.
The annual conference of the A.

and suooertful session'. On Sunday
they filled three ohurohes, tbe
white pastors giving up their ap
pointments and tendering them

B. Lofton, pastor of St. Phillips

the white Methodist eburob Sun
day night to a large white congre
gation, who were well pleased with
his decorum. The colored people
in Dawson'deserve great oredit for
the manner la which they have en
tertained tbe member* of tbis con
ference. They put themselves to a
great deal of trouble and expense,
and did It cheerfully, that.all who
eame should be pleased and wish to
come again. And they succeeded.
Every one, so tar as heard from,
has been lavish In hla praises of the
hospitality of Dawson's colored
people, and the kindness and con
sideration of the whites. They say
tbey have been muoh better treated
her* than they ware at some other
muon larger oltles than thte.
‘We will be glad when tbe time
rolls round for them to hold their
conference in our oity again, and
think we can promise them evea a
better time than they had till*
time. Their next conference will
be held In ThomaavlUe.
