Statues In London.
Hear ono of the entrances of the most
beautiful park in London there are four
eyesores that were once, no donbt, pretty
groups of statuary. It is years sines I
noticed them first, but even then they
were hardly recognizable as ever having
been ornamental. And there they stand
yet, blotched, battered, scabbed scaroe-
crows, such as ono ooald net match In
any town in the world. Half the statues
in. London look like the victims of ery
sipelas. In some the disease Is more ad
vanced than in others. Queen Anne's
was'the most distressing case. The fig
ure of that sovereign lady in St. Paul's
churchyard was minus its nose when I
saw it first, and remained in that state
for about ten yean. And goodnms
knows, a nose is a useful member in
England, in winter especially.—Max
O'Eell.
Cariosities of the Fst.nl Ode*.
The records of the patent office show
some most remarkable devices. Among
the instances of this lately quoted is an
automatio bath tub, which starts the hot
and cold water at a given time in the
morning, maintains exactly the right
temperature by a thermostatic arrange
ment, rings a bell when the bath Is
ready, and two minutes later suddenly
drops tuo sleeper’s pillow and tarns him

glare through the livelong night fills the
souls of the rats and mice with dismay.

The most repulsive food which human
beings could cat is man. Fortunately
cannlbnlixm, although once very gen
eral, is now mainly confined to the moat
degraded tribes of the South Sea Islands,
and to some districts of Australia and
central Africa. Lindsay, of Pitacottie,
relates that a man, his wife and family
were burned to death on the east coast
of Scotland for eating children whom
they hod stolen, and during the French
revolution tho heart of the unfortunate
Princess Lain bell o was actually torn out
of her body by one of the yelling sav
ages near, token to a restaurant and
thbre cooked and eaten
Human flesh is sold not to be unpala
table, and this la confirmed by the horri
ble narrative given by Lindsay. He men
tions that os one of tho girl* was being
taken to execution oho exclaimed:
“Wherefore chide ye with me, as if I
had committed an unworthy act? GHveme
credence, sod trow me, if jr* had experi
ence of eating men and women’s flesh ye
would never forehare it again.'' The
Tannese of our own day distribute hu
man flesh in little bits to their friends os
delicious morsels, and say that the fleah
of a black man is preferable to that of a
white one,' for. the latter taste* gait;
other cannibals hold the some.—Scottish

Carried the Baby.
Ono of the district messenger boys un
dertook a novel task Sunday afternoon.
He was called to a Franklin street house,
where he found a woman with a baby.
“I am going to take baby to the park fox
an airing," aho said. “My maid has gone
home sick, and I want yon to go with
me to carry the baby. You can do it
well enough if you only think so.” • The
boy did not think so at all, bat be had
no way out of it, and for three hours he
bore the infant until he feaifed that his
firms would come oat of their sockets.
‘Don’t gimme no more calls to that
loose,” he said, what he reported at
headquarters. “I ooaldn* stan* two tixnes
