happy these days.
Wlint a bright, warm, pleasant
day yesterday was! The sky was
bb blue, and tlio air as pleasant as a
day in Jnue. Who would live else
where than in the South, when
such days can be enjoyed? Ah,
but Bouthwest Georgia is a glorious
country 1
The Times, of Brunswick, usually
an accurate paper, and one or two
other papers less accurate, had the
legislature adjourned 8aturday
night. These papers should give
their Atlanta correspondents a
raking over the coals, or compel!
them to remain out of bed until
news events are attended to prop
erly.

CHRISTMAS CONTRASTS.
What a contrast in the CbtstmaB
days of the South and North! In
one, cold, biting winds, heavy snow
storms, and impassable roads; in
the other, bright, warm, cheery
days, with just enough of the
North wind to bring roses to the
girlB cheeks and make out-of-door
life a pleasure.
And such a difference in the way
of celebrating the day! Christmas
in the Bouth resembles in a great
measure the Fourth of July in the
Northern States. In regard to the
small boy and his tin horn, though,
they both aro alike.
If for once the seasons could be
reversed, and the Bouth have a big
snow storm to makegood sleighing,
mid the North have a warm, sum
mer day, it would doubly enhance
the pleasure of both sections. As
it is, neither can know or appreciate
the pleasures of the other. The
Northern Christmas day is as likely
to be cold, raw, with a freezing
sleet, as it is to be a day for sleigh
ing parties. In regard to the weath
er, the Bouth is more certain of a
nice, clear day, with a warm sun,
that the North is of even passable
out door weather.
With nil due regard to the pleas-
tires of skating, coasting and
sleighing of the North, Christmas
day In ail its glory is only to be
found in the Bouth. Here the open
hearted hospitality of the people, a
precious heirloom from past gener
ations, makes the day doubly glad
and welcome. Here the old En
glish custom still exists of fami
lies coming together around the
table for a yearly meeting, a joy
ous greeting, and a communion of
love. Btrangers are welcomed and
made to forget that they are far
from home. A feeling of peace
permeates each heart until It over
flows with good oheer to all. What
a glorious day is Christmas, and
how we all love it, and look for
ward to It. What a heritage
Christ gave us lu this day of
“peace, and good will to all men.”
We should love It, and keep it,
reverence and observe it.
A Busy Week in the Bouth.
In reviewing the Industrial pro
gress of the South for the week, the
Manufacturer's Record of Deosni-
ber 20, says:
The past week has been a very
busy one in the Bouth, and the
prospects are bright for great ao-
tlvity during the winter and spring.
The well-rounded development
goes steadily on, and enterprises of
great magnitude, as well as smaller
ones, are being organized daily,
while capitalists from the North
and from Europe are Investigating
in many places with a view to
heavy investments lu railroad, in
manufacturing and in town build
iug enterprises. At a meeting of
the stockholders of the Greensboro
Hteel & Iron Co., of Greensboro, N.
C., it was unanimously resolved
to contract at once for
the construction of a
large Bessemer iron furnace,
which will mark the beginning of
tbe coke-making iron interests in
that Btate, except in an experi
ment. At Richlauds, Va., $1,000-
000 tube works are to be built by
American and foreign capitalists;
Cardifl', Tenn., is to have basic
steel works; a new furnace has
been contracted for lu Tennessee;
a $1,000,000 land and Improvement
company has been organized at
Morristown, Tenn.; in West Vir
ginia two coal mining and coking
companies have been chartered,
one with a capital of $1,000,000 and
the other $140,000; Arkansas has a
now $100,000 coal mining company ;
Florida a $40,000 llbre inanufactur
lug company; Houston, Texas, i
new $1,500,000 land and develop
ment company; Wheeling, W. Va.,
a $4,000,000 tobacco manufac
turing company; rort Royal, Va.,
$200,000Iron company; Bavernake,
Va., a $300,000 Improvement com
pany; Milledgevllle, Ga., a $100,000
water works company; Covington,
Ky , a $50,000 buggy manufactur
ing company; Alabama, a $500,000
oil and natural gas factory; Roa
noke, Va., a $500,000 street railroad
building company; Luray, Va., a
$30,000 foundry company: Norfolk,
Va., a $1,000,000 land Improvement
company and a $300,000 company.
These are but Illustrations of what
the record for the week shows, but
they indicate how widespread Is
the activity and bow wldo the di
versity of the enterprises organized.
The new year bids fair to Bhow a
wonderful degree of industrial ac
tivity from the Potomac to the Rio
Grande.
