Will oe pleased to have you call. , W. A. Cook. The Minstrels. Primrose & West’s minstrels played last night to a very good house: T£e opening was something unusual, and pleased the audience. Some specialties were very good, but asawhoie the show was Inferior to what has generally visited Amerleus. The street parade amounted to nothing, and the elec tric lights, so extensively adver tised in the march of the "Imperi als,” was entirely omitted, though the drilling was fine without It. No -enoores were permitted, >nd general desire of the managemi seemed to be to get through as soon as possible. Altogether, U wae a fair show, but not up to the stand ard. Cook. ripe BllUard FUylng, Yesterday, the billiard playing of Mr. George Powers, of the Minstrel troup, at the Allen House bar, gathered a large crowd, and be cer tainly Is the best player who ever handled a oue In Amerleus. Ev erybody else stopped playing, and watched bis shots. He wss playing with one of the best plsyers In the city, and cbuld have easily grand discounted him. Anything lest than oue hundred was a small run fer him, aud his fancy shots were marvels. Never was such playing seen here, and the crot/d continu ously applauded his shill. Betides being an excellent bit Hard player, Mr. Powers Is a clever gentleman and a good minstrel man. His work last night added much to the performance. seourod The fare would have to be nd vanced to bring them here, but everybody would be reasonably, Be- cured, as none but good servauts would be Bent, who would do as agreed.; These mi Vant* ate trained for their positions, and can do at much work as three negro servants will, while they are careful and neat. Higher wages would have to be paid,'but ll would be more than made up lu what they would uot steal, and each family would.not have to feed tbe cook and her sister and her cousin and her aunts, to say nothing of tbe house girls rela tives. Introddcing white labor will break up all the old associations connected vith negro servants, but It will also greatly lighten house hold expenses—a matter that would gladden'many a husband’s heart and fattier his pocket-book. This can be done—all that Is needed is for some energetic lady to call a few friends together and start the ball rolliug. ~.. -rm The Recorder will be glad’ to aid any movement of this kind. OVER THE CITY. Yesterday’s election for tax col lector was a quiet one, except for those Interested in the result, and but for the fact that tbe barrooms were closed many would not have known that it was election day A traveling heard to ment tan. yesterday was this, and from 1 remarks seemed to think that oerlouinrSs great on* elections. America Bald he: "I make Amerious pretty often, but only for ^fe ttay or so at a time. Within the past year I have been hero-fifteen times, and it has Jnst been my luek for four teen of those days to be the ones for some election. . I thought cer tain that I would tnise it this time, but I find I made a mistake, and amdrytas a chip.” Speaking generally, ppm water always has a bluish bno, yet tome kaa a strong yellowish or brownish tint, from the presence of iron or peat, and yet is bee from hurtful impurities. The bine tint Of watpr may be discerned in the follow ing simple manner:- Let down into the water which is being experimented on a metal tube (opened at the top and closed with a clean plate of glass at the .other end) near to some white object, a big white bowlder, for on instance, where the water is 15 or 30 feet deep. Tjie bowlder or other object, when viewed through the tube, will bo found to be of a most bcantifnl bine color. It would appear to be yellow if its color was due to the light reflected by extremely stnall particles of matter suspended in the water.—St. Lonis Republic. 1 No More Coloring Pipes. Coloring meerschaums has gono out of fashion. Yean ago it was quite a fad, but so much trouble wss required to keep a meerschaum in good condition that most smokers discarded, their pipes and took to cigars. A meerschaum, .to be properly colored, needs as much at tention os a baby. It mnst not get too hot. for then the wax coating is driven ont and the pipe doe* not take a proper color; it mnst not get too cold nor cool off suddenly, or It will crack; yon mnst not touch it with yew-fingers, nor smoke it too steadily, nor keep a cover on it while using it, for in either case it 1* spoiled. Men, os n rule, do not smoke for the pleasure of coloring a pipe,' bnt for tbe comfort they get from the habit, and so the meerschaum has given way.— Interview in St. Louis Globe-Democrat, An Absent Minded Maine Sian* Along in tho fall, when ho saw his neighbors digging their potatoes, be took his hoes, put some boskets into the cart, and with his boy drove tbe team across the'pasture to a back Held. The coming year, however, there will be few, and like everybody else, they are living in hope. Looking for Tourists. Now that the cold weather has set in with a vengence In tbe North, and the holidays are over, tbe at tention of the Northernere will again be turned to tbs South, and the heavy winter travel la looked for to begin soon. Usually the first wtfek In January Is the starting time, nnd from then until the first of February the flow of Southern travel is oontlnuous and on the in crease. Of this, of oourse Amerleus will get her share, as already has our delightful climate beoom» known throughout the country. Th* hotel men all over this section are get ting ready for their guests, and soon will have houses and hand* A young gentleman of Amerleus gave an unique receipt yesterday for unmarried ladies to use it they desire to have opportunities to unite themselves lu tbe boDde of matrimony. "I rau across a letter," said ho, -‘from a young lady recently mar ried, to a youug unmarried lady in this olty. How I happened to seo tbe letter Is of uo importance to what I have to say, to I will leave that out. The epistle was interest- lug *11 the way through, but one point is of especial Importance. It was, how to get married. “The writer advised the recipient . T * Tw» Much Light* A peculiar phase of the use of power ful projectors in naval warfare has been brought ont in somo tests mode by the French uaval authorities. It appears that in misty weather the reflection and glare of the light from the projectors served only to blind the ship, imd the torpedo boats were able to approach within easy distance and discharge their torpedoes without lieing discovered.— Few Orleans Picayune.
