City, which has 04 pnpils and has gradu- j craze over it. Nearly every lady who
ated 208; the New York hospital, with I comes along here doing her day's mar-
48 pupils and 192 graduates, and Mount keting says, 'Send me up a pumpkin,
Sinai, with CO pupils and 111 graduates.
There are also smaller schools in the
city, but, great or small, Bellevue must
always be honored as the pioneer. Her
graduates are at the bead of moot of the
important schools and hospitals in the
country, and have even gone so fat
afield as England, Italy and China.
The next school to be established was
the New York city, which was started
by the commissioners of charities and
correction in 1877, and is entirely sup
ported by the city. Until 1889 it was
known as the Charity Hospital school,
because it began there, but as it grew
its work spread, until the old name was
misleading and bad to be changed.
It is now the largest and in some re
spects the most importuit of all the
schools, as it nurses five different hos
pitals—Charity and Maternity on Black
well’s Island, the Infants’ hospital on
Randall’s Island, Gouvernenr, at Gou-
vemeu^Slip, and Harlem, at the foot oi
East One Hundred and Twentieth street,
the two last being accident or emergency
hospitals, while at Charity the cases are
largely chronic. Besides the pnpils oi
the school there are thirty-two perma
nent trained nurses at Charity and Ran
dall’s Island, making nearly a hundred
in'nll, for whom the superintendent it
directly responsible, and over whom she
has full authority. The other schools in
the city are supported from the funds ol
the hospitals which they nurse.—Mrs,
Frederick Rhinelander Jones in Scrib
ner's.
Flsli with Ilnm Label*.
If any one engaged in sea fishing should
capture fish with brass labels tied to their
tails with aluminum wire or a black silk
cord an explanation will no doubt be
somewhat eagerly desired. There are
hundreds of fish so treated in tho sea,
and it need not be concluded that prac
tical jokers have lieen at work. The
brass label is an indication that tiio fish
wearing it 1ms been in the hands of the
grave men of science who are investigat
ing the habits, the food and tho growth
conditions of fish in Scottish waters. Twc
objects are served by the label attach
ment.
In tho event of the fish being recap
tnred by any one who will give informa
tion to the scientific cruisers of the Scot
tish fishery board on the Garland there
will be something known about its mi
gratory habits, its rate of growtli in a
state of freedom may also be investigat
ed. It might be thought that the chance
of meeting with these labeled fish again
would be very small, but it appears that
the Garland cruisers themselves lmvo re-
captured 2) per cent, of the plaice nnd
18 per cent, of the cod wearing their
medals. But only plaice, cod and skate
were recaptured. The experiments nre
to be continued on a large scale. They
do not interfere with tho health of the
fish, which when recaaght are plump and
in good condition.—London Illustrated
News.
si olin la the Older.
Among a certain coterie in thi* city
more or less speculation' was a short
time since going on concerning the rela
tive ages of Senator Charles B. Farwel]
and his brother John V., tho merchant
prince. It wns of no use to consult the
public records, for they differed nnd
were not reliable. And as John V.
simply shook his head and smiled in
answer to inquiries on the subject, and
as tho senator when in Washington de
clined to express himself in writing, the
individuals interested were compelled tc
let their thirst for knowledge continue
nnslakencd until the latter should re
turn. When he did return he was ill,
but that was no obstacle, and upon gain
ing his prince the committee put the
question to him. The se.%ior looked at
them for a moment, raised himself on
his elbow and replied in feeble tones:
"I was bom first, but John is the
older."
Then ho laydown on his pillow, turned
over, nnd the committee, bursting with
a plethora of information, withdrew.—

Wealthy.
A prominent citizen of St. Paul wus in
Minneu;>olis and met a former acquaint
ance whose ordinary condition was what
is known as impeeunions. This time,
however, his face was fairly beaming.
"How are you?" he asked in a cheerful
bass voice as he extended his hand to the
man from St. Paul.
“First rate. How are you?"
"Splendid! Do you know"—here he
dropped his voico to a confidential key
—“I’ve been given the use for life of a
half million dollar estate over on Nicol

largo one; my little boy wants to count
the seeds.’
“I thought at first it was jack-o'-lan
terns they wanted them for, each as we
used to make when I was a boy, but it
seems that there is a guessing contest
for a pony going on. The child guess
ing the nearest to the correct number of
seeds in a giant pnmpldn exhibited in
one of their windows gets the pony, and
these boys nre hunting a few facts on
the seed qnestion. 'Tisn't a bad idea,
bnt it keeps os produce men hustling

Floral Fashion*.
The chrysanthemum is in the ascend
ant, and very soon every house, flat or
room will be illnmined by its splendid
bloom. This is one of the effects of tak
ing Japanese art into onr bosom. We
have learned the decorative lesson and
profited, for it would seem a flowerless
antnmn were we to be deprived now of
this perfect bit of natural decoration.
And another floral idea has also arrived
from Japan, one which bids fair to rival
the more fragile creations of the green-
honse. Dwarfed trees, strange, stunted,
gnome like plants, set in the artistic
porcelain pots of that land of art and
invention, will la) used for dinner table
and house decoration. Already they
are employing them in London houses,
and no donbt in time they will appear
here, superseding the familiar rubber
plants and palm, and giving that one
note of vernal oddity 60 prized by the
tasteful owner of a well composed room.
—Boston Herald.
Lightning Kills Bird*.
A singular story is told by a head
gamekeeper in Prussian Silesia. A few
weeks ago one of his under keepers
fonnd in the tract of shooting country
under his chargo a covey of partridges,
two old birds and fifteen young ones, all
lying dead. They were huddled up
close together within tho space of a
square yard, bnt were too decomposed
to show nny reliuhlo signs of the cause
of their death. Poison was at first sus
pected, as the spot was close to some
peasants' allotment, but a careful ex
amination of the ground revealed the
fact that the birds had been struck by
lightning. The flash had struck a little
monnd a short distance away, and then
conrsed nlong tho ground, and tho grass
surrounding tho spot where tho par
tridges lay had n burned and yellow ap
pearance.—Exchange.
Walt Whitman's Humor.
Walt Whitman is popularly thonght
to have no sense of hnmor, bnt one day
a young man dropped in upon him at hit
bamble home in Camden, N. J., intro
duced himself as a poet, and begged to
be allowed permission to read selection!
from a bundle of manuscripts which he
carried. "No, thank yon," said Whit
man. courteously bnt firmly, “I have
beta paralyzed twice.”—San Francisco

Money That Will Not lie I'uhl.
The postoffice department will not
pay the $1,000 reward offered for tho
capture and conviction of Bubo Bur
row. There is a standing reward offered
by the postoffice department for tho cap
ture nnd conviction of nny one robbing
the mails. This is tho reward that ap
plied to Rnbe Burrow. But it will not
bo paid because there was no convic
tion, nor has proof been established in
court that Rube Burrow robbed the
mails. Tho department officers know he
did, bnt they never pay a reward with
out legal proof and conviction. Thus
the captnrcra of Rubo Burrow will fail
to get $1,000 of tho $7,500 reward on the
head of the noted outlaw.—Atlanta Con
stitution.
The Parts Hull Ulna.
Tho arena of the Rne Pergolese, Paris,
where bull fights take place every Sun
day and Wednesday, was several days
ago the scene of an accident which will
probably prove fatal. It was recently
thought that greater interest would bo
given to the spectacle by the addition of
negroes stimulating the bull with point
ed cudgels during the fight. One of
these men was so seriously gored by an
infuriated bull that ho wns carried out
of the arena and conveyed to his lodg
ings.—Pall Mall Gazette.
Mme. Artond, of Paris, died recently,
and as not a stiver of her money could
be found in the hands of her ngents her
heirs began n search for it in the furni
ture of her home. After ripping np
everything they examined a plaster bust
of the Venns of Milo, and there was the
treasure, amounting to a considerable
fortune. The base of the statue was
covered over underneath with oilcloth,
and when the covering was removed out
tumbled a choice collection of bank
notes, bonds, securities and obligations.
