“Bird!” exclaimed Mr. Phalen’s visitor
in astonishment. “Why, yon don’i
mean to say yon keep a bird with all
those cats in the house?** For the sudden
chorus of hissing, spitting and mewing
that floated in from the rear room seemed
to indicate that an animated felinoargn-
ment was in progress there.
“There is no cat under my n>of,” was
the reply. “All the noise yon hear is
made by a single mocking bird. Just
step into the other room and look at him.
A more woebegone creature yon never
saw.”
The bird, indeed, looked ns though he
had seen hard and long service. lie had
no vestige of a tail left, undone of hi*
eyes was gone. Ilis few feathers were
ruffled, and all liis sleek and glorious
beauty had departed
“Three years ago old Nick (that is his
same) was a remarkably handsome bird , r
said Mr. Plialen, “and his nmnemns ac
complish merits made him a great favor
ite aud very valuable. He could whistle
‘The Campbells Are Coming* and
dozen other airs with wonderful clear
ness and musical precision, and he was
so clever that he could learn a new tune
in an hour. I would not have sold him
then for $500.
“But one night everybody in the house
was awakened by an awful uproar in the
back parlor. The mocking 1/ird was
shrieking, shouting and swearing like s
human being; a cat, that must hove en
tered by the cellar door, for we harbored
none of his land, was spitting and hiss
ing furiously? and the sound of some
heavy metallic object dashed frequently
and violently against the funiitnre was
distracting. I went downstairs with »
light, and I found that the cats paw was
tightly wedged between the wires of the
bird's prison, and the terrified brute was
swinging the cage about the room, try
ing to release liimself. Old Nick wits
nearly dead and badly dilapidated, as
you see him now, before i could disen
tangle the cat from the wires and kick j
him ont into the darkness.
“The bird’s tail never grew again, nor
did his plumage regain its luster. He
was quite silent for a full week, and then
he suddenly made the air vocal with a
horrible series of caterwanlings, aud he
has kept them up almost without inter
mission ever since. In the few dreadful
minutes that he passed face to fac e with
the cat he learned every intonation of
voico that bis assailant could teach him,
and utterly forgot all the songs aud
speeches with which years of careful
tuition bud enriched his mind. A poor
exchange, it seems to me.**—New York

profitably too. The time is looked for

Travel | n Chinn.
Travel iu northern China is accom
plished in n cart, a mule litter, or the
■addle. The first method is the meet
uncomfortable but the most rrijtid, the
second the most comfortable bnt the
slowest, the third the most independent
but the most uncertain.
The cart used in northern China has
two heavy wheels, with wooden axle, no
springs, and a body abont fonr feet long,
and three broad, over which is a light
framework top covered with bine cotton.
Two mules driven tandem by a carter
seated on the left shaft take it along at
a rate of about three miles an bonr, and
one can make in it an average of thirty-
five miles a day, even over the roughest
country. It will carry abont three
hundred poantls of goods, and one or
even two passengers; and the tighter one
is squeezed in the more comfortable it
will prove, for that, and that alone, will
be a protection from the terrible jolting
over the rongh country roads.
It is told in some old book of travel in
the narrative of the mission of Lord
Amherst to tho court of Pekin, if I re
member rightly, that one of his attend
ants died from the effects of the jolting
ho received during a short jonrney in one
of these carts. Bnt this mode of travel
being the most rapid, I adopted it. Sev
eral years of experience of cart travel in
China had made ine bold, so that I did
not fonr the fate which bad overtaken
the Amherst mission man. Comfortably
wrapped in my wadded Chinese clothes,
1 squeezed myself into my cart, feeling
like n delicate piece of china ware packed
in cotton, and after n hearty farewell to
the friends with whom 1 was staying at
Pekin, tho carters cracked their whips,
and with a shout to the mules we were
off.—Century.
