a fair sized crowd greeted him at the
opera house last night
It was after 8 o’clock before a single
seat was occupied, but by 8:45 a crowd
of about sixty men and boy* bad gath-

^ Chief Lingo bad a detail of policemen
Mattered about tM house, and tbe(r ln.
tfruction* were to search for eggs. Tho
janitor collected as many of the iogoing
vegetables at the door as he could, but
some of tho eggs prepared for the eastcr
season of 1800 were slipped by him
safely.
At tlie opening of tho first act the jan.
ltor's collection consisted of cabbage,
turnips, lettuce, sausage, pretzels and
weiner wurst. What was done with
these trophies could not be ascertained,
but it is supposed they were added to
the already large collection garnered in
the other cities of the circuit.
The curtain rose on the first act
amid deep silence, the orchestra having
failed to show up at all, Tho entire
first act was witnessed In silence by the
audience, except that when the guard ap
peared armed' with a double-barreled
breech-loading shotgun somebody
whistled “Johnny get your gun,” and
another wanted to know “wbat bad be
come of the thousand cigars that went
with It” , . r( .
When deMauprat desired to surrender
his sword, a voice in the crowd advised
him to stlok It fir', Scotty aqd see if he
was Alive, hut the ad vice was unheeded.
At length, however, someone pulled
the string and the sticks all' got off the
stage, leaving Soytt alone U. file glory. .
.Scotty than got down to- work, and so
did the wind.;,' The breezes played with
his whiskers ao brlskly that the star
was obliged to hold on to them all the
time. None of these things, however,
worried the “successor of Barrett."
About one word la tea could he' dis*
tinguished by 'the audience, but , the
ranting did not ceaso on tbla account.
Some one advised Scott to buy some
mucilage aud stick his a whiskers on bet
ter, but still he was the great unembar
rassed actor-of the age.
Tho curtain finally fell and the audi
ence gave vent to an encore to which
Scott responded. .
The manipulator of t to curtain came
near causing a serious accident right
here. Scott was bowing hit acknowl
edgements to the crowd whon the cur
tain began falling rapidly, mlBsIng him
about an Inch in its decent.
The audience then demanded muslo
and a prominent young man volunteered
to furnish It free gntis, acd opening the
piano rendered “Johnny got your gun”
In a most pathetlo manner.
The curtain rose on the second act,
and the dummies In the support hopped
around as well as their marvelous tights
with loose fitting trunk attachments
would allow.
The second act passed with an oc
casional bit of advice from the orowd to
do aomethlng or other that wasn't in
the play, but Scott stuck to bis own
idoas. At the close of this act the
audienoe was regaled with “ohop sticks”
on the piano, tho performer being a
well-known young dry goods man.
The third and last act opened up In a
pretty lively manner, the oat calls and
groans of a miniature “dumb bull” ad
ding to tho turmult.
About tho time Scott didn’t find the
word “fall” In his vocabulary, an ancient
specimen of hen fruit landed on his left
shoulder and bespangled the spotles*
whiteness of his sailor collar with
streaks of yellow.
Scott stood It like a veteran, but when
the eggs and other household supplies
got too numerous he quickly retired be
hind the scenes and failed to reappear.
It was a noticeable fact that not one of
the trained actore on the stage ever for
moment turned his back to the
audience.
A* this junctuie a head was poked
out from behind the curtain to announce
that Mr. Thornton would not re-appear,
but the missiles filled tho air and the
announcement was never made. The
audience didn’t demand this formality
however, for they had enough aud had
already begun to leave the bouse.

effected, Jackson street school will be
able to accommodate from 150' to 180
more pupils, pod the additional two
rooms to bo annexed to McKay hill

The demand for more school room Is
Imperious. Three more teacher* in the
white school and two more in the colored
school* will have to be elected at the
next monthly meeting of the board.
To supply new positions in the school
rooms en examination of candidates for

Another question considered with

made because of a groat many children
living at great distance from the schools
could not reach the school fn time, and
were fated to be marked tardy day after
day.
The last move on the school board was
to resolve to pay the teachers in due
time, and to direot the secretary of the
board to draw checks on the city treas
ury for that purpose.

In attending to the needs of her teaoh-
