It’s easy enough
•—the Ball corset. That’s be^
cause it has coils of fine wire
springs in the sides. They
clasp the figure closely, but
yield to every motion.
They “give”, but they come
back. So does your money
—if you’ve worn a Ball cor
set two or three weeks, and
find that you don’t like it.

A Bleb Part* Banar.
Pucciarelli, a Pari* beggar, committed
enicido by throwing himself from the
window of the apartment which he occu
pied in the Rue Princesse. The streets
of Paris, if they are not exactly paveP
with gold for the benefit of the beg
gar, are at any rate macadamized with
bronze. The commissary of police fo
the quarter in which tin-'Mine Prin
cesse is situated was called upon to make
the usual examination us to the death of
Pucciarelli. In performing his task in
the dead man's room—which was no ...
tninly furnished with anPldent luxurj
to render the same a lengthy operation
he nevertheless made the interesting di.
covery that the old man possessed in se
curities and money no less a sum than
80,000 francs ($18,000.)
Like most beggars, Pucciarelli lived
frugally: a little bread and cheese and _
demi-settier of wine were sufficient for
his needs. One luxury he allowed him
self, and that was cigarettes. All the
afternoon and evening he lay on his l«-d
and smoked cigarettes. Lately hi- had
met with reverses in his profession. Oth
er beggars stronger than himself had
driven him away from where he had been
wont to make so much, and lie had beeu
forced to seek fresli fields for his iiiilns
try.-< lor. Chicago News.
Tile Finest I'tillmiiti Car.
Hot Springs thoroughbreds are ag
grieved because Cornelius Vanderbilt has
not taken his annual hath here this sea
son. But the assemblage of millionaires
has been tolerably representative of the
country’s plutocratic crop. The sidings
at the Hot Springs railway terminus
have been filled with private cars of rail
way and other potentates who can afford
such luxuries for weeks. Just now the
finest private car here is Mr. Pullman')
of course. The car is painted a quiet
color, and there is nothing gaudy about
its appointments, lmt the big arched
plate glass windows, the massive steel
frame and many other details bespeak
the superior quality of this comfortable
home on wheels.
It is liko Mr. Pullman that the Pull
man monogram, P. P. C. in gold, is the
only distinguishing mark upon the side
of tho car. So many men would have
pnt their own initials there. Mr. Pull
man once told me himself that he hadn't
much use for n private car, and most of
nis traveling is done in ordinary Pull
man coaches.—Hot Springs Cor. Pitts
burg Dispatch.
Newspaper Statistic*.
The statistics which have been gath
ered for the 1891 edition of the American
Newspaper Directory show a remarkable
increase in the number of newspajiers
published. According to-this standard
authority there uro now 19,373 publica
tions of different classes in the United
States and Canada—a net gain of 1,013
over last year's record. At no time since
the publication of the book was begun
has tho increase been so large. Last year
it was only 858, and the figures for the
present year even exceed those of 1884,
when the net increase was 1,500.
As regards geographical distribution
New York Btste still holds the lead, now
having 1,958 papers ii3 against 1,778 for
last year. Illinois, Pennsylvania and
Ohio follow in the order named. The
fifth and sixth places are now ln-ld by
Iowa and Missouri, whose gain in new
newspapers has been large enough to pnt
them nheud of the Dominion of Canada
and Kansas, which held these positions
last year. The end of the list is brought
up by Alaska, with only three publica
tions.—Printer’s Ink.

Solid Fungus.
What its discoverer declared to be a
new kind of mineral was received by the
department of agriculture the other day
all tho way from California. Professor
Galloway examined it, and told a report
er thnt it waa merely a fntigns of a very
peculiar kind woich grows in California
several other states as far east as
M.chigan, being developed npon the
tmuks of pine trees. The specimen men
tioned weighed abont three pounds and
was very solid, being composed almost
ontirely of resin. This material, for the
purpose of its own snpport, the parasite
causes the tree to secrete in unnsnal
quantities. Wherever the fungns flonr-
ishes it is believed by the country people
to bo an excellent substitute for quinine,
and is used by them as a remedy for
chills and fever.—Washington Star.
