against disease. Danger comes oft-
enest through impure hlootl. Keep
your blood in order, and yon teep
in health. For this, nothing equals
Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discov
ery. It invigorates the liver, puri
fies and enriches the blood, and
rouses every organ into healthy ac
tion. By this means it cures. Ev
ery part of the system feels its
saving influence. Dyspepsia, Indi
gestion, Biliousness. Scrofulous,
Skin and Scalp Diseases — even
Consumption (or I.ung-scrofula)
in its earlier stages, all yield to it.
It’s the only Liver, Blond and Lung
Remedy that's guarantied to bene

them out.
“ Golden Medical Discovery ”
contains no alcohol to inebriate,
and no syrup or sugar to derango
digestion.
It's a concentrated vegetable ex
tract; put up in largo bottles;
pleasant to the taste, and equally
good for adults or children.

About two weeks ago Nemiah quar
reled with another Indian in his hand,
and the hands of the chief were almost
stained with the blond of his third
tim. Other Indians present seized and
bound him, and immediately s^nt a
sage to B. Franklin, justice of the peace
at Tatlae Lake, that they had got Ne-
xniah and wanted theanthorities to come
np and take him. <hi receipt of this in-
furination Franklin, accompanied by a
posse of special constables, left immedi
ately. only to find- on arriving nt their
destination that their bird had flown.
Nemiah's squaw had cut the ropes that
l>onnd him while the others were asleep.
Making good use* of his liberty Nemiah
took to the “stick.” where he is supposed
to be at present. The party found that
the Indian Guishon, with whom Nemiah
had the quarrel, was not dangerously in

A local expert proposes to make mush
room hunting a sjiecialty this summer,
and he is certain that if there is any sec
tion of Maine where there are lovers of
this fungus it is right here in Lewiston
and Auburn. On his finger he can count
scores of men (has to use his fingers twice
over and more, too, you see) who are fond
of them and know how to cook them.
At one certain country house in Lewis
ton the Sunday mushroom dinner is a
fixed thing in summer, and my! aren't
they delicious! The old rule for distin
guishing them from toadstools—viz., eat
them, and if you die tjiey are toadstools
—is not now operative.
It’s a poor mushroom gatherer who
does not know the difference. The top of
the young mushroom is white, the under
portion loose aud lighter. As it matures
the top changes to a brown color and the
under part to a dark red. The stem,
which is white and round when young,
also grows dark with age. Eatable
mushrooms have pleasant odor and are
never slimy. A test projnjsed is to sprin
kle salt on the under side or spongy part
and give it time to act. If it turns black
the innshroom is good: if yellow, the
toadstool is poisonous.—Lewiston Jour
nal.
Woodpecker** •! nit ire.
A year ago a pair of red headed wood
peckers determined to peck a hole in the
boarding under tho eaves of a house, as
wood peckers often do. The owner of the
house, not liking such mutilation, after
repeated efforts succeeded in driving
them away, and they went to work at
onco and dug a hole in the nearest tree.
When the birds' home was finished and
housekeeping had begun the farmer’i
boys captured the female as she sat in the
nest and kept her in a cage, hoping to
catch tho male also.
Two days later he returned with an
other wife. The boys relented at the
sight. They gave Mrs. Woodpecker No.
1 her liberty and awaited results.
To their surprise the male woodpecker,
after a relentless pursuit of about six
hours, killed her. Then he destroyed the
one egg which she had laid, and con tin
ued housekeeping with wife No. 2 as
if nothing had happened.—Cor. Youth’s

Heating Street Car Railways.
It is hard to got ahead of the street car
companies, liut some people in Chicago
think they are going to do it. They are
having constructed vehicles exactly like
street cars, except tliat the wheels are a
little larger. They are ganged to fit the
car tracks, and it is proposed to run them
Dn the tracks just like any horse car, with
out asking with your leave or by your
leave. They will stop like the street
cars and charge the same fare. If tin-
car companies object, owners of the new
vehicles will {mint to the fact that they
are simply omnibuses, which are en
titled u use any portion of the public
ftnsits, whether tracks happen to be
there or not. If the car companies don’t
like their tracks to be nsed tln-y are at
liberty to take them away.—Exchange.
Hands That Statesmen Write.
Anion# Lord Granville's other amiable
possesions was that of a very neat and
scholarly handwriting. Perhaps this’is
one ret. son for his popularity with press
men. On the whole, however, states-
jon certainly do not write worse than
writers.” Mr. Gladstone's hand is in
deed spoiled by over indulgence m {>oet-
cards. Mr. Balfour’s hand is not pretty,
and Mr. G-then's is execrable. Mr.
John Morley’s hand has character, hut is
not always easy to read. Lord Salisbury
write* clearly. So do Lord Rosebery
and Lord Harrington. But it may be
doubted whether any of those we have
mentioned write at once so prettily and
so legibly as did Lord Granville.—Pall
