J.R.S.
To run or not to run; that's the ques
tion.
And a most Important one It is to to
the stockholders In tho Americus elec
tric street railroad.
The Times-Kecouder yesterday morn
ing suggested that some arrangement he
made, whereby the road could bo oper
ated during the summer months.
And upon tills lino suggested that a
local company leaso the road for six
months, or even a shorter period, hut
anyway to run the cars at this season
when the profits wore greatest.
It seems that the suggestion was
thought of favorably, tho only difference
being that the local stockholders want
the receiver to operate the line and get
all the profits therefor.
Anyway they, too, are anxious to see
the cars start again, and to that end will
proceed upon the following line.
They have employed Col. B. P. Hol
lis as their representative, and through
him will petition the court to poatpone
the sale of the road as has been ordered,
and will further petition that the re
ceiver be required to run the cars dur
ing the summer months.
There are forty-five stockholders in
the road residing in Americus, and
something like ten thousand of their
hard earned dollars are tied up in the
defunct enterprise. Some of these, it is
said, claim that the petition ordering
the sale of the road waa made and grant
ed without their knowledge.
The road la bonded for $30,000, and
the proceeds arising from the sale will
necessarily go first towards the payment
of these bonds.
In which event the Americus stock
holders will be in the tureen, as it is
hardly probable that auything like this
amount will be paid for the property.
The road has been offered at privato sale
for $35,000, but the prospective buyers
considered this amount excessive and
declined to buy.
And that is about the slams of the
case at thl« time.
The local stockholders have a vague
idea that they have some rights in the
matter that should be looked after, and
it is to this end that they have employed
counsel and will ask of tho court that
the receiver be required to ope rate the
road.
They are especially anxious to see tho
road resume business again, but if this
is not done they either want their money
back or else think that the very libei ai
franchise granted the street railroad
company should be revoked.
They are opposed to having a foreign
company come here, gobble up the
property for a song and then very likely
let it lie Idle for an indefinite period,
years perhaps, without being of any
benefit whatever to anyone.
And, in the meantime, prevent any
other company from building and ope.
rating a road that might, perhaps, de.
sire to do so.
Judge Fort’s answer to the petition
will be awaited with Interest, not only
by those of our people who put their
money In the enterprise, but by the
town at large, every cltixen of which ia
anxious that tho cars should bo started
again in any event
We have just received a beautiful case
